Don't get me wrong, I want 3 ABBA FT sets (Warbonnet, WP Green and EMD Demo) so we're on the same page. Add into the mix that Atlas has apparently walked away from their K-line tooling arrangements, according to a post on the Atlas forum, so Scott will probably be looking to leverage the E7 chassis, etal over to E8s after the second run of E7s without as much concern now for market saturation.

Agreed -- E8s seem like the logical next step.

I seemed to think the FT support was pretty vocal
FT's, FT's FT's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think about it, of the 3 engines mentioned FP7,FL9, and FT's, it is the only one that you can slap a Warbonnet on and have it be legitimate, although I would rather see Santa Fe 100 in the original paint scheme.
If you think about it Scott, the FT would please a whole lot of people. You wouldn't have to worry about anyone nipping at your heels because MTH and Lionel already have toy versions that they would never redo. An FT in all variations would be something you could drive orders for years.
I like FTs, but why do you suppose there have been so few done? In true O Scale I can think of only one run - the Bobbye Hall imports. I do have cast 17/64 units, but they were built long before the explosion of diesel types, and modelers only had a few prototypes to choose from. I think the profit is in E-7s, PAs, and F-7s, and then off to the more modern road locomotives. I don't even think the FA is all that popular, but Weaver did do a nice model a while back.
Opinion.
My NYC A-B set arrived last night. As soon as I pulled it out, I was struck by the shade of dark gray (as one other member pointed out)...
it has a green hue (especially under incandescant light) and seems too light to me. I could live with that, but the striping and lettering is silver instead of white! Not off-white...silver! I've been modelling and studying NYC power for 40 years and have never seen this. Official paint diagrams show Dupont white. Every prototype photo and
model I've seen, going back to Lionel's 2344 of almost 60 years ago has white lettering and stripes.
If I were buying the old fashioned way (at shows or stores), I would have passed on this. But, now we're forced to buy sight-unseen.
I wonder whether the Golden Gate Depot 1948 Century cars will have the same error, or not match the locomotives they are designed to go with.
Either way, it's not good.
Incidentally, the pilot was floating around loose in the box.
Interested to hear other opinions about the colors of the NYC's.

Not trying to completely derail a thread on E7s, mind you, but IMO, the FT is a solid candidate...the MTH model has truck spacing issues that have been beaten to death in other threads and the Lionel is semi-scale at best...the FT was owned by 23 roads (not counting the demos) -- all class 1s with good followings on these forums -- and if done right, I could see a major hit for 3rd Rail...but at the end of the day, Scott knows what will sell and what won't...as you said, "Opinion."
I do hope folks enjoy their E7s...I like the New England roads' ones myself...

I believe Custom Brass may have imported FTs back in there early days, they did Sharks also [not the best assembled pieces]
Looks like the NYC units have some issues.
If I recall didn't the NYC have some unique grays?
A greenish tint would suggest a cool gray and the guy mixing in the paint-shop might have missed the formula. Makes me wonder if the painter is colorblind; seriously. A good subcontractor slash paint-shop uses Pantone numbers to generate chips. And even with the Pantone numbers the paint chip results coming back are creative to say the least especially from Ajin.. EEEK And back they go again, and again.... Also if the data packet was misread, paint schematics can get really confusing, keep in mind these are little machines like vacuum cleaners to these people not toy trains that mimic a full size train that is long gone. Also remember the language barrier here.. dealing with the builders in the Orient is tough. Scott needs to repeat, repeat, and re-repeat his comments on a project adjustment. And still after the super simplification of the instructions they still misinterpret the data. Sometimes the pilot test shots are right on and 40 pieces show up wrong upon production! Case and point this unit.
I say if these models are at least 80% correct we are all doing OK, brass included.
Maybe Scott can arrange a respray? The silver I am sure is pad printed or Tampo of some kind. The silver seems like a logical screw up. LOL In HO at DVP, Ajin sent us 30 sets of GM&O F units reversed and all the lettering in maroon... Cool looking but NO WAY! LOLOL, away they went back to Ajin. Another $1200 in shipping FedEx international air freight.
I am glad the CB&Q units came out OK. Darn hard scheme to screw up really.. But the pad printed grill art is right just too heavily applied.. so the grill lines run together. IT happens..
I think Scott has some ironing out to do with his plastic builder but they are getting better and better all the time. I still remember Sunset's first brass Zephyr in China back in 1996.. OMG. After 40-60 hours it looks OK, just OK. A full re-wire, a full rebuild of two cars, and full re-power, and new wheels custom made! ARGH! But life on the Midland without the Pioneer Zephyr working the Cheyenne DZ connection, not an option.. Beats scratch-building.. and the plating looks great.
What was that old saying again in O scale? "It's what we have....."

So far in O scale brass your only FT's are from Overland Models, Ajin 1995 with the tower drive (beautiful pieces) or the chunky monkey Bobby Hall editions from the early 1980's...
Oops, Oops, and Oops. Ed
Hey Scott- On the diaphragm.... I love it.. IT IS SCALE and looks good. I am glad you guys did not use that rubber thing you put on the GGD line of passenger cars. So my comment that the diaphragm does not work is a little coy... Sorry bout' that. I am glad you guys developed a scale diaphragm.

Ok, all these pictures are nice. Now, who is going to remove the shell and post a picture of the guts? I'd love to see the new horizontal drive.
Erik, are you up to the challenge?
Yves
Will do Sunday Yves.. Need to get into the studio for the real close ups...
I just realized that back of the cab looks like it stops between the cab side window and the cab door. I've only seen pictures, am I correct. I would have thought one of the benefits of a single motor drive would be the ability to have a nice cab interior.
I think someone mentioned the speaker is in the way.
I run DC and I feel like I have been eclipsed by technology. Slow speed, power, detail is fantastic, and the sound is best I have ever heard. But since it is powered directly from the track, when you cut current to change direction, you lose that wonderful feature. I have a set of MTH sharks that I had converted but I kept the sound. It has a circuit and a battery that keeps the sound going for 5-10 seconds after track power. So If anyone knows where I can get the circuit to keep the sound running, alot of DC guys will appreciate it. Also, it does take alot of current to move this. I am using an Aristo craft system which is more than enough for everything else I own, even double headed passenger trains, but it is a little short of what i need for the E7s. Last thing, I wsh the gray on the B&O units matched the gray on the golden gate cars. I know colors in real life could vary but that happens enough without intentionally using a different shade of gray. Many other nice features, kadees installed, windows, crew in cab, nice MU hoses hanging from B unit.
In short:
The drawings from NYC (which I have here) show white lettering and striping on the '48 passenger diesel scheme. They show DuPont flat aluminum lettering and striping on passenger equipment in the '48 scheme.
rdunniii, the answer to that question is "Yes".
Two "A" PRR E7's arrived last night in fine shape. I have no problem with the paint color or the stripes. Will run next week but from what I havce seen abd heard they will run nicely. The back windows were paint on my units. I will order a PC from the second run...Thanks Scott...

yup!
I hope the following could be done:
1-Leave the side windows clear, NO PAINT, PA-LEEEZE!
2-leave off the maintenance nose grab irons on the nose and the eyebrows
(I will add my own made by P&D, unless you guys want me to send you P&D castings you can make them yourself?
3-Attach the cab steps to the body not the truck frame.
4-soften up the hard edges on the number boards (not that big of deal with me)
5-correct the grill art around the headlight
Really that is about it for me.
Chip had some technical advice that I would certainly agree with.
I am VERY happy with them and look forward with great excitement to getting enough of these to run triple elephant style on the CZ!

I think the PRR units turned out REALY WELL! Best of the bunch so far that I have seen. How is the color on the Union Pacific Yellow?
(c) Pitogo's Awesome Photos
They worked so hard on the Burlington that they forgot the NYC and it turned out poorly. I'm disappointed with mine!
For those of you with CZ consists the E7 was a favorite with the Q on this train. This photo shows the DZ behind a pair of E7's.

Perhaps the green tint was a misinterpretation of the paint schematic..
These HO models in my opinion were really wrong.. the light gray band has a greenish tint but it certainly is not turquoise. Oops.
This certainly is an example of an extreme tint on the green with the Railway Classics 1948 Century set, a $5600 set in 1998! I can only imagine what Doug Bauer thought when he first received these sets. YIKES!
My Betterment 6-3 Heavy I would like to think is pretty close, a very very slight whisper of green. I know nothing about NYC colors; but I do like the scheme a LOT!

John, the Burlington's have some issues also..
The color is good, the grills are UGH, the stripes are OK but missing the cut out around the headlight but OK.. The anti-climbers are missing the silver highlights on the ribs. NOt perfect, but not missing a letter!
I am sure Scott will make it right with you guys.
Certainly not from a lack of information and documentation supplied.
I'd have to suggest getting hold of Scott directly in this instance.
For the record my B unit is not missing any letters. I had not unwrapped it, because I was disappointed with the color on the powered A.
I think the PRR units turned out REALY WELL! Best of the bunch so far that I have seen. How is the color on the Union Pacific Yellow?
Well, Jonathan is a PRR fan, what do you expect I actually think the GN and SP&S units done for Petersen Supply came out the nicest although I did not get the opportunity to check them out in detail.
The PRR, etal windows are painted black not unpainted.
Getting the front stirrups fixed by default won't happen because of the resulting curve restrictions. However, providing them (along with the holes in the chassis) I will lobby Scott for (maybe providing a pair along with the missing closed pilot).
I have also lobbied Scott about doing the second run of CB&Q with the angled numberboards. I'll order another pair if he does.
If anyone is coming to O Scale West this week come on over to Sunset on thursday if you can. He's not announcing an open house this year but said anyone is welcome to come over as the usual suspects will be there anyway

Nope. Just trying to alert someone who might have read that who might be coming from some distance from going over there on wednesday.

I was so caught up in your edit disclosure statement that I forgot to reply the topic.
I dug out a Key Imports phase I E7 A unit, Union Pacific #988 from the 2002/2003 run. I was hoping to use another club members CB&Q units but his are E8's and the old Samhongsa run from 1990. I will get a full gamut of photos in the studio tomorrow.
One of our members is out at O Scale West; KMI is also there. Wish I could go, I really need too. Maybe next year.
On the front cab step issue I am pretty sure I can modify this pretty well without a lot of trouble. It is NO trouble really and considering the 3RS guys they need to stay. Scott I would do as Richard suggests and provide a casting that will fit nicely in the floor pressing with a few screws; Scott you have done this before with the brass passenger cars over the years, case and point Harriman 70' cars.
I would like the large number boards also, either one is fine. I would like to Alcad a set and simulate stainless panels. If you do alter to the larger number boards pay close attention the changes in the stripes, red or black. I prefer black nose myself. On the issue of stainless retrofits, I will dig up the bible and post the numbers that did NOT have stainless panel retrofits but were modified with large number boards.
Closed pilot is a must in my opinion. Most of the time they ran with the doors closed on the Q on the point and the same for many roads; of course in time by the 1960's nobody cared anyway.
Good points Richard, I iswh I could mke it two the O Sclae Wst this yaer... "Oops, I should edit my typos I missed... I better not.."

Ah so... Gotcha buddy!
I see some of the guys doing that on the MTJ forum also. I am trying to figure out what I am missing.. I have noticed you can edit without the posted note for about 10 minutes after the initial post.
Its all good my friend.. Just asking.
