Train looks and sounds great, glad you got your Legacy system and are finally able to start enjoying it. I still think Lionel has the best sound. Have fun with it!

Just turn the smoker off, unless you really like it. Modern diesels don't smoke. May be, some moisture vaporizing in the cold, like 10°.
Play with the brake slider and listen to the engine sounds.

They are not what I would call "modern" diesels. F, E and is that a U. I suppose it depends on perspective. Those look like Russian locos.
Remember, most of us aren't modeling modern diesels either.
Hard to imagine that Union Pacific car is being pulled by a Russian locomotive, how's that happen?
He's running an SD. What I meant to say is the black, belching smoke is similar to the Russian locos.

Smoke, lights, sounds, flashing lights, etc. It's all good! 
My railroad has no established maintenance program yet, they are still working on it. My modern diesels all smoke from time to time, especially when the CHO (chief of household operations) is not in the basement!
yea now that Lionel fixed the smoke unit it runs great and smokes great pulse now I got legacy I am glad I got one . - matt
