My GP-7, Western Maryland (Legacy) (6-28361) has been a problem child since birth. Latest misbehavior: it was in storage for 6 mos. over the winter. (Commercial storage not climate controlled). I lubed and greased it, added smoke fluid, out on the rials and it went around my track twice, smoking like a bandit, everything working then it stopped, cab lights blinked, flickered, went out lost sounds as well. I've tried on a number of times to reset the engine. It seems to reset fine, it performs an extended start up correctly. bell, whistle work, etc., but as soon as I put power to it it moves about 1/2" then quits...goes into extended shut down and that's it. sometimes the cab light goes off, sometimes it stays on, sometimes the headlights stay on, sometimes they go off. I tried again after turning the smoke unit off. Same-0, same-O. Any ideas before I take it to the shop? Or should I just call it quits and turn it into a "hangar queen"...???

Did you reprogram (not reset) the engine with the AUX-1-2 reprogram code? Your engine is an early Legacy locomotive. If reprogramming does not help, pull the body rhen remove the R4LC board from the motherboard and reinstall it. Do the same with the power and audio board while inside.
I pulled the boards and reinstalled them. When i applied power to the track it the lights came on and I could hear the smoke unit making noise, I suspect the fan was turning. The cab light was blinking slowly. I shut everything down, then did the reprogramming sequence, the cabe light remained steady everything seemed fine until I applied throttle. Same problem moved about 1/2" then went into the shutdown sequence.
Try shutting the smoke unit off then go AUX1-0.
I moved the switch to "no SMK". Started the engine the hit AUX1-0. the. Horn blew three times but as soon as I added throttle the headlights began to blink and then the engine stopped.
Its possible you have a bad motor encoder that bad. Also check for any debris on the squirrel cage or sensor.
Bill
Could it be a poor wheel contact with the outside rail or chassis ground problem... Does everything go dead after moving a few inches?
OK, here's the latest. I just added power and engaged the startup dialog. All was well. Headlights light, cab light on. I tried a few dialog sequences, and that was fine. Horn and bell, fine. couplers, fine. I hit the direction button, and that was fine, but after a few seconds, it executed a direction change on its own...from front to rear. then i noticed a marker light would blink when I hit the coupler button... then I gave it some throttle, it moved a fraction then stopped. I hit the change direction button and gave it throttle, it started slowly then just took off like a dragster and was non-repsonsive to the throttle.
Boxcar Bill: I have no idea what a motor encoder is or looks like but if it's the circuit board sitting on top of the front motor which has something that looks like a cage, I didn't see any debris but I blew it out with compressed air. All my other Legacy and TMCC engines run fine on my layout. As I noted earlier it went around the track a few times when i first started it up.
This is a puzzlement to be sure.

Try lubing the center rail roller pins, crud gets in there and makes the center rail roller almost useless. . also jumper the outside rails together for testing (Alligator clips or whatever you can use.
I did lube the center rollers and lubed as advised in the manual when I took it out of storage. I'll jumper the outside rails.
Well Gents. Thanks for your help but it seems it's dead...sort of. When I put it on the track and power up, I hear the smoke fan running, lights come on but it will not take any commands. I'm going to drop it off for repair.
May have missed it, track voltage and power supply? Was thinking along the same lines as Gregg.
