Anyone have the latest on this as to when it will arrive?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
The last report was the GCT would ship the end of this month into the beginning of January.
I am sure it will be worth the wait.
It's "Grand Central Terminal", not "station". A RR terminal and a RR station have different functions.
That's why it's "GCT".
GCT - true - but many non-RR folks still refer to it as "station" - that does not make it correct, but "it is what it is" as the current platitude goes!
To follow up on Art's comments, a year ago with a pending storm, a network reporter was doing a live shot from the GCT and kept referring to it as the "Grand Central Station". Many who don't understand there is a difference call it a station. No harm done. Either way, it is a magnificent structure and a model of it displayed on a layout is very appropriate.
There are many beautiful stations, but this one is on the top of my list.
Technically, for the New York Central Railroad and it's descendants it is Grand Central Terminal. However, for the New York Subway System trains that stop there, it is Grand Central Station.
Thanks Skip for the clarification. So in reality, both uses are correct.
Well D500 from Alabama, It's Grand Central Station to New Yorkers like me. Lived in the NY since 1930.
I could probably Google it but, what is the difference between a terminal and a station????
all terminals are stations, but not all stations are terminals?
As I understand it trains can continue through a station but terminate at a terminal.
There certainly has been much confusion over the years, Grand Cental Station was a radio soap opera years ago and is also the name of the post office facility behind the Terminal. If you see an old envelop postmarked Grand Central Station its from there, not the NYC terminal.

Skip, actually the subway station is named "Grand Central" period. All the porcelain signs say Grand Central, and the conductors announce it as "Grand Central."
The post office around the corner is named "Grand Central Station." (ZIP 10017)
The terminal is named "Grand Central Terminal", not-with-standing any "evidence" from people who have lived there for decades. Note that those same people probably call a small pink handball a "spaldeen." As an old Brooklyn grandmother would put it "Just because everybody does it doesn't mean you have to do it. If they told you to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you do THAT?"
The "wrong" name was made quite famous on radio for many years:
http://www.otrcat.com/grand-ce...station-p-48544.html
The show also featured steam power sound effects (really wrong).
That's show-biz!

Arthur is correct. But speaking technically, those are subway stations under Grand Central Terminal. So just as the signs at the Times Square station merely say Times Square, the signs at the Grand Central station merely say Grand Central.

Do any of the tile signs in the NYC subway station include the word "station"?
I grew up in eastern Queens, beyond the subway system's reach. We had to take a bus to get to the subway.
I don't remember anyone referring to Grand Central Terminal. It was always "Grand Central Station". We also had Grand Central Parkway.
We called those pink balls that Arthur mentioned "Spauldines" or "Pennsy Pinkies". Those were brand names. We played stoop ball, stickball, punchball, and various other games with them. Some of us played outdoor handball with them too. The "serious" handball players used smaller hard black balls, which required handball gloves.

Now that makes perfect sense to me and I think I'm going believe it.
Spauldines and Pennsy Pinkies make no sense at all. You guys have a world all to your own....
We hit those spaldines against a wall with our knuckles. It's sad that i still don't know Burfle. plain stupid.
Anybody that calls it Grand Central Terminal is NOT from New York. Even Ralph Kramden calls it Grand Central Station. As for those late coming Pennsy Pinkies They were no Spauldeen. A 3 sewer shot with a Spauldeen would only go 2.5 sewers with a Pennsy Pinkie
If this pic will blow up enough to read, the name Ingraved into the building is Grand Central TERMINAL, regardless of who or how many call it GC Station, TERMINAL is the ONLY CORRECT name for the current building. A Previous building was properly named GC Station, but the the Current building is TERMINAL, anythingelse is wrong.

Like I said the only people that call it terminal aren't from new york
It doesn't matter if you're from New York, Chicago or Seattle, the proper name is still Grand Central TERMINAL, anything else is STILL WRONG.
For Decades, Ford has called thier Starter Relay a Solenoid, doesn't matter that it is FORD, or how long they called it that, SOLENOID is still the wrong name for that part.
No matter who you are, or where you are from, the wrong name for any item is still the wrong name, doesn't mean somone wont understand what you are talking about, but you are still wrong.

A rose by any other name Your from Portland you should understand that
You are absolutely right McGillicutty is the man
The pic says it all, call it whatever you like, GCT, is still the proper name. this ****in match has gone on more than long enough, and will serve no further purpose to continue. Right or wrong, call what you like.
Doug
Your the one that said we are wrong All I said is that New Yorkers call it Grand Central Station And guess what Its in New York
Skip, actually the subway station is named "Grand Central" period. All the porcelain signs say Grand Central, and the conductors announce it as "Grand Central."
Actually, the conductor last evening said, "This station is Grand Central."
To those who insist that Grand Central Station is wrong:
Ever hear of "common usage" or "idiom"
Millions of people can't be wrong

LOL, I think Spauldeen balls were preferred in my neighborhood too.
Fascinating how a thread can morph into something other than the original posters question of when it will be shipped.
Metro North the commuter rail agency that runs the trains into the station lists it as GCT in all their timetables.
I grew up out on LI so we went into Penn station when going to the city but the only ball we would use was a Spauldeen (made by Spalding) all the other were clearly inferior.
Scotie
The pic says it all, ...
exactly, and you should know more than anyone...
Challengers are 4-8-4's, right?

Before there was a Metro North there was a little railroad called the New York Central. They owned this little station called Grand Central. The Tracks of the New York Central extended south of 42 street into the Murray Hill Tunnel. Hence trains actually passed through the station southbound. The station was replaced with a beautiful structure, the tracks went underground and the tracks that went south of 42 street were removed. The original was a station. The new structure is a terminal but to New Yorkers it will always be as busy as Grand Central station.
I grew up in NY and everyone I knew called it Grand Central Station. I could be wrong but I remember one of the characters on I Love Lucy calling it that too. I agree the proper name is Terminal. I also agree with Ben. New Yorkers call it Station.
It's Grand Central Station.
It's Grand Central Station. PERIOD
It's still grand Central Station no matter how you slice it.
Blueline, I'm, from Baltimore and we always heard the phrase "It's busier than Grand Central Station in here.", growing up so it's not just New Yorkers and we had pinkies when I was a kid:

This is such a funny post. We went through this when the clocks at Harbor Freight were for sale.

I dont know overland. The American Flyer Catalogs since 1939 when the engine was first made always referred to it as the Union Pacific Northern. The 1953 catalog from which the page referenced was taken referred to sets which Flyer dubbed "The Challengers". The sets description mentions the locomotive as a Union Pacific Northern 4-8-4 as they had done in prior years.
I Think the terminology The Challengers as used by American Flyer was meant to indicate the Union Pacific Train which was known by that name. The Challenger was an economy service the Union Pacific began in the 1930s which it continued into the late 1940s when the City Trains began daily service. It was re-instituted in 1953 as a streamlined train . Flyers train set is such a modern train with streamlined cars.

I have a question. Is it "Sixth Avenue" or "Avenue of the Americas"?
Just because it's an official name that doesn't necessarily mean the locals use it.
The post office around the corner is named "Grand Central Station." (ZIP 10017)
Exactly.
Grand Central Terminal is the Proper name for the current structure, and is Literally Chisled in Stone.
Many may refer to it as GC STATION, nope, no law against it, still not correct.
You can call it whatever you like, I was pointing out the CORRECT name is GCT, anythingelse, well whatever works for you.
I am at least happy that passenger train collector was able to answer the OP's original question, before the thread got hijacked.
I don't normally agree with the moderators locking a thread, but this one has gone so far off topic, and has gotten somewhat personal, that this is a fitting example of a thread doomed for locking.
If anyonelse has more specific info on the model of GCT's expected delivery date, I would imagine the OP would appreciate the info.
May all the forum members and thier Loved Ones have a Happy, Healthy and Wealthy New Year.

Yep, if someone official put it there it must be correct!
