When the Lo-V's ran, the IRT did not have numbers assigned to routes. It was generally known as the Lexington Ave Express. Its probably closest to what is referred to as the #5 today. On this line originally, there was no express stop at 59th street so those Lo-V's uptown would squeal north out of Grand Central and race up to 86th street, Yorkville, in just a few minutes . It was a thrilling high speed run, probably only surpassed by the 6-8th ave runs between 59th street and 125th street.  Numbers were assigned to the IRT lines in the late 50's early 60's when the new R series cars began to replace the Lo-V's on the Lexington Avenue Line.

I  think the two sound files for the Q's differentiate between the lines operated on in the versions produced . The Blue and Orange cars were meant for teh Flushing Line , todays #7 while the Green ones were for the 3rd avenue el . I think however when MTH produced the green sound file , they included stops for the Astoria line not the 3rd ave el. The Green cars did run on the Astoria line before they were moved to the 3rd ave line in 1950. 

 

My recollection is that the motor sounds on the MTH cars in general sound very similar. In real life, we probably remember the motor sounds of the prototypes as being noticeably different.
