There have been many editions of the 1945-1969 guide published.  Later they split off into motive power (V1) and rolling stock (V2). Values aside, is there a vast difference between any edition of these guides?  Theoretically as the years go by more bits of info are added or corrected but is it enough to pay top dollar for the most recent V1 or save many dollars on a previous edition?

i cannot comment on the Lionel volumes in particular, but i recently learned a good lesson about buying used books i think others might find useful.  condition ratings on books available through used book resellers are extremely critical.  not knowing exactly what to expect, i recently bought a Bing catalog reprint volume that was indicated as being in "Good" condition and priced well below a few others ranked as Very Good and Excellent.  as it turned out the book was (to me) in near mint condition while the Good rating was probably chosen to cover a very few pages that had some penciled-in prices which are probably erasable (though to me it's just more information so i'll leave it as is) and a few notes written on some blank cover sheets near the end.

since most people in this hobby probably buy books more for reference than for their collector value, i would definitely consider some lower condition ratings for the exact same useful information at a cost savings.
