The New York Times moved into its newly constructed Times Tower in January 1905. The magnificent and classic Neo Gothic building became the focus of New Years Eve celebrations in New York City. It all began with its first ball drop, celebrating the opening of the 25 story skyscraper on December 31, 1904. The beautiful architectural details lasted until Allied Chemical Co bought the building in the early 1960's. The building, which is now little more than a huge electronic billboard collage, remains the center of New York's New Years Eve celebration and the ball drop is televised around the world.
On my "Christmas in New York City" Lionel Layout, I chose to have the Times Square landmark portrayed in its Neo Gothic glory, as it was in the 1940's and 1950's. Also included are the smoking Camel sign and Ralph Kramden's Bus.
