Another Forum member and I have been talking to Harry Heike for some time about undertaking a project to build an O-Gauge model of the famous Cincinnati Union Terminal, arguably one of the most beautiful train stations anywhere. Our lobbying efforts have paid off and Harry has started the design stages for this project. Those interested will have the option of buying just the shell portion (if there are space limitations) or can add the wings. A nice option, I think.

What a great time to be in this hobby with so many wonderful new products that are being introduced. This new Terminal should be a magnificent addition to any layout. Harry's is known for his high quality and the CUT will be no exception. Harry will have material to show us shortly. Stay tuned.

The reason Harry decided to do this in sections was to accommodate more layouts. I agree, if you add all of the sections, this will be big, very big. However the shell portion, that everyone recognizes, may fit in well with some of the larger layouts. As an example, the MTH bank conversion job that Alex Mallaie did for us is also very long, but we made it work. Some of you may remember this when we first installed it. Harry is very excited about this project as this complex has been begging to be done.

Now that is an awesome (the literal translation) project on a wonderful Deco building! It would have to be the centre-piece no matter which layout it's on. What a beauty.

If I might suggest something more humble for the smaller layout forumites, I think the South Bend, IN Union Station, designed by the same architects as the CUT, is worth a look-over by a manufacturer or two. (It was originally designed for a compact downtown area) There's always the old Studebaker plant next door for additional ideas.

South Bend Union: (I know, not quite the same, but.......)

I may not model the CUT in its ASG decorated version, we love the original structure far to much! My wife and I went on a date or two in the CUT's ice cream parlor, her grandfather departed from the CUT as a 17 year old to fight in WW II, and our kids have spent countless days in its current museums -- which include the entire city ca 1940 in S scale. Our daughter, age 9, asked a few years ago if she could get married in the rotunda of the CUT, not sure if she will, but the CUT is very much a part of our lives, just as it is for hundreds of other families throughout Cincinnati.

All Star Summer however may well make it to the layout...image

Wonderful stories about how the CUT has been a part of your family history. I can readily see why the CUT is so special to you. I can fully understand that this is a must have on your layout. The good news is Harry will make it happen with style, quality, and all at a fair price.
