No.  I model PRR in 1949 but grew up on the west coast, so I have not seen any of the models I have in action. I have seen them in museums.

Yes, the N&W 1776 both with the Bicentennial paint job and afterwards. It looked like this when its crankshaft was broken.

And GP-9 #502 was one of the Redbirds originally used for passenger duty.

I have seen 611, both at Roanoke and at Spencer. I saw the NS Heritage units when they had them all at Spencer as well. Since I run mostly first and second generation diesels there is not much chance of seeing the real thing outside of a few in museums. I do have pictures of the real versions of most of my engines, mostly found on railpictures.net.

Might not be an engine, but the old DLW MU units aka the "Green Monsters"...used to ride them back in the day (who is kidding, they took them out of revenue service in the early 80's!), have the Lionel model of them....when I get my layout back in operation  I plan on trying to put in the authentic interior, with the wicker seats and people cursing at the splinters and women at what it did to their panty hose and such. 

Yes, quite a few actually. I do this backwards from what the OP may have intended. I buy models of trains I've seen in the real world. With the exception of the Hustle Muscle I took all the photos.

I have the Weaver model of the CP Empress. Here she is double heading with Milwaukee road 261.

Of course I have Lionel's first run of 261.

3985 visited St Paul. I have the JLC version which I'll be using to pull the new excursion set. Even have a yellow aux tender for it.

I have the Lionel model of the St Louis big boy. It sits above the television where I see it everyday. I would run it, but the layout has clearance issues.

I've seen this one a bunch of times, in various locations, because it is owned by the Minnesota Transportation Museum. This is inside the Jackson Street Roundhouse in St Paul where it has spent the last few years on display. It may be up in Osceola, WI doing excursions for the summer, because it wasn't there in May.

Yes. I did see the Grand Trunk Western SD40s and GP38-2s in person when they were regularly operating on the Grand Trunk Western.

I am old enough to have seen many of my model engines in service.  These include:  New Haven EP-5, EP-4, EP-3, RDC-1, SP GS-4, UP Challenger, UP Big Boy, SP PA in Daylight paint, UP - E8, ATSF - Warbonnet F units, etc.  Of course, I have seen many modern engines in service also.

I lived near the New Haven line into Hell Gate/Penn Station. My father’s parents lived along the New Haven 4 track main line in Larchmont.

I grew up seeing 1st generation diesels in the McGinnis livery as well as EP-5s whizzing by with passenger trains.

I do remember PennCentral black on the same line in the late 60s.

I have not only seen but operated the real version this little guy. It has different paint now but it was the only 44 Tonner UP ever owned. Now the real one is at the Danbury CT Railroad Museum. 

Born and raised on Long Island so not much variety on a daily basis. I do remember seeing several NYC/ PC's , New Haven, etc when I was a kid.

As a person who has visited the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Maryland, I always wanted a model of the handsome Chesapeake & Ohio Yellowbelly Hudson No.490. Very happy to have the scale sized Lionel model with the same number.

Hopefully will have a model of the 1604 Allegheny in my collection soon, too...

Saw plenty of GG1's along the NJ Transit in the 70's, but not my 4935. 

I have seen 4935 at Strasburg, though, and my 3750 as well.

Not an engine, but I have a model of the NYSW caboose at Pompton Lakes, which I saw every day when I worked for Susie Q.

The Pere Marquette 1223 Berkshire is on display in Grand Haven, Michigan...and then there is one that is in service on the Marshall and Michigan Southern RR as well!

I was not lucky enough to ever see an AC-6 in the flesh, but saw and rode behind the ACs with streamlined faces and rectangular tenders.  They started at AC-8, and ended with 4294 at class AC-12

Saw NS 8103 (N&W painted heritage unit) in Portsmouth, Ohio a few months ago.

I have been fortunate enough to see quite a few steam locomotives in real life and ridden in or behind several of them.  I do not, yet, have models of any of them.

I'm just getting back into the hobby and only have one "locomotive."  It's not steam and I haven't seen it in real life, but hope to soon.

Back around 1982 my ship the U.S.S. Portland went to Portland Maine. At the VFW a friend and I met up with a engineer from the B&M and he took us to the yard there where there was a old GP-9 sitting they used for switching. He let us move it about 50', so It may not be the same number it was the same type and road name of some of my engines. 

I know I have a picture of NS 911 in real life but I don’t know what hard drive it’s in. For now, here is a pic of my model 911. Hopefully this summer I will get to see Rdg 5513 too.

I Have a Legacy SD70Ace Heritage Virginia engine and saw the real one in Bethlahem Pa.

I have a K-Line TMCC K4 1361 and have seen the real PRR K4 in pieces at Steamtown Scranton Pa.

i have the Legacy PRR GP9 7048 and seen the real engine at Hourse Shoe Curve.

i don't own a Nickel Plate 765 Berkshire but have ridden behind it.

Also ridden behind the Blue Mountain and Reading 2102 but don't own a model of it.
