If you have the GoPro 3 black or 4 you can shoot video and stills at the same time. We just shoot some drone video for a project in 4k HD. Wow 4000 lines. Don

It sure is, I am planning on retrofitting one of my MTH premier Husky Stacks with a small jig to hold the camera as the train traverses the layout.  Should be a lot of fun! The camera is extremely small, I don't have the precise dimensions but it is tiny. 

 

I have the GoPro Hero 3 White edition, it retails for right around $199.99.  One of my Christmas gifts from Mrs. F30MSport .  I enjoy making train videos and interacting with fellow enthusiasts on YouTube, so wanted to increase the quality and content of my videos (hopefully this is a start).

 

As a side note, the newer and most advanced GoPro is the Hero 4 I believe, it retails for $499.99.

   Thanks much for the info, looks like for around $200.00 and the quality I see, I am going to have to consider purchasing one of these Go Pro Cameras to make some layout running video, the audio on this little camera sounds real good also.

Very good quality. A new video camera is on our list, so I appreciate seeing just how good the quality is with the Go Pro.

Keep in mind while filming your layout that the GoPro shots close to your own vision in wide mode. Sometimes you will get a lot of things you don't want in your video. You can cut the width in different modes but still it makes for a very wide shot. I'm thinking of modifying an old F-3 cab and mounting the camera inside. That way you will only really see out the front windows. That in turn will cut down width and hight. Another little trick. If the camera sits too high on a car or engine you can turn it upside down so the lens is lower to the track. There's a flip mode so when the camera is running it flips the picture. Hope this helps. I have three GoPros so can help with most questions. Botttom shot is a still we shot from a drone. We were shooting 4K video and taking stills at the same time. Don

We gave both our sons one of those for Christmas this year and both of them are having a lot of fun with them. Your movies might even make me think about one for the trains. Your movies are very impressive.

 

Both put some kind of Apps on their phones ipaddies things and fool with the cameras remotely. It's all way over my head.

Larry you can run the camera and see the video on either a I pad or I phone with a 3+ or 4 model. The video was transmitted to our drone pilot's video googles so he saw what the camera was seeing. It's not has hard as you think to work the camera. GoPro also has a free edit system you can download. Don

I'm not sure I have that functionality on mine as I do not have the 4, but the 3 White Edition.  Will have to check.  That is a fabulous shot btw!!

 

Additional question, do you recommend any good video editing software?

Really cool Michael! Did you change out the bulbs on the BNSF? They look blue and I really like that effect. May just be my eyes lol.

They are great cameras. It is nice to finally retire the old trusty iPad camera and YouTube Capture.  They work well, but the only issue I found, at least from my experience is that lighting must be optimal whence using the iPad/iPhone cameras (I tried doing a couple of night-time running videos and they came out terrible as the glare from the lights really erodes the quality of the video).  

 

Anyways, I'm very happy with the new camera and look forward to learning and utilizing all of its capabilities.

But I'm going to wait and let them boys learn all the fancy hi tech stuff and give me a go pro lesson 101 with some hands on  show and tell. Maybe my old brain can figure some of it out. I would like to run one around the layout someday. Looks pretty cool. 

 

Also Don you will appreciate this. One of my sons is a avid duck hunter . He already bought the dog harness and put it on his Lab. He sent me a movie with the dog retrieving a duck, even one when she retrieved a double. Way to cool.

Its not your eyes, the headlights/ditchlights/numberboards/groundlights on the die-cast ES44AC renditions all have LEDs with the bluish-white tone.  I know some people are not fans, but I personally like the bluish-white look.  It's incredibly bright and looks amazing at night (in particular, the ground lighting effects).

 

Several of Lionel's earlier diesels also had the bluish-white LEDs if memory serves correct.  Most of the newer stuff today has the softer-white LEDs.

Also the GoPro white does not have the wifi feature.
