I retired a few years ago and have a 7' x 10' table in my garage.  I bought three LionChief kits and a whole bunch of O36 track and switches.  I still had my O27 engine, tender, and cars from the 1950s, and I would run them on their own loop around the outside while I ran two trains on an inside loop with several switches.  The O27 engine finally died and - with the old cars in pretty poor shape - I'm retiring everything except my ZW transformer and a few accessories.

I'd love to hear some ideas on how to maximize my space and my ability to run several trains at a time.  I'm open to doing two separate levels and running sets independently, especially since the neighborhood kids like to come over to run the trains.

I do have a set of Lionel trestles, but they really don't work well.  I'd be happy to build my own trestles, but my skill set is limited, and my saws only include a table saw and a hand saw.  So, in addition to layout ideas, if anyone can send me photos of or a link to simple trestles, it would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Andy

I can't help you much, I'm in about the same position you are.  I will definitely put in two levels and run them independently.  I love the #60 trolley, and have mod'd it to have lights on both ends, being a white light in the forward direction and a flashing red light in the rear (they change when it hits the bumper).  I would put that on the top level, and use the bottom level, with a more complicated layout, to run the command control stuff.  I would probably run O36 as well since I have no plans on buying long engines or rolling stock.

Again, sorry I can't give you any real world experience, just my thoughts.  Keep us posted on how it goes.

Andy- a clean slate......love it!

Lot's of track plans available online to fit this space. I'd start with a 036 oval around the outside.

The inside could be anything from an oval/ figure eight to a pair of ovals with switches connecting them. An independent upper level track could be fit in too.

This plan is for 6x12 and could easily be modified to fit.

Search the track plan and layout design topic here on the forum as well.
