All the good things said about Williams, but I'm working on a broken one and need some help.

It is a traditional sized die cast dual motored GG1, green 5 stripe, cab #4930.  Melted wiring and a stripped worm gear.

I replaced the burnt/melted wiring and got both motors to work.  Is this thing one direction only?  There are no switches.  When I apply power or interrupt and then reapply power the motors only turn in one direction.

There are two circuit boards.  One is for the horn.  The other is wired for power/ground/lights/horn CB and motors.  Quite a large board for one direction?

Can someone help with the truck worm gear?  I dont know who to contact to order one.

Thanks for your help.

The circuit board that you say is wired for the power/ground/lights/and motors should have a few side by side places where about 3 or 4 four wire connectors look like they can go into is where the motors get wired into, not sure which as one of those slots can be wired for an extra set of motors.

You may have to order a motor to get the worm gear, be sure which motor unit you order it for, as there can be four motor possibilities. It might be best to order two motors so that they can be a matched set, otherwise one will turn faster then the other and one or both burn out.

My experience with a new motor upgrade kit was like that as I wanted to upgrade an F-7 A unit that had no motors, I got the upgrade and after installing it the new motored F-7 ran circles around my older F-7, so that is why I advise getting two motors that are matched.

Lee, you couldn't be more wrong.  The shell is perfect, clean and shiney.  There doesn't appear to be too much run time.  The owner is an older gentleman who bought it new.

There are brass filings on the inside.  The power and ground wires melted in a heap over the sound board.  The flywheel on the motor with the stripped gear made contact with the roof and threw brass filings everywhere.  One center roller is locked and won't turn.

I'm just trying to repair it for the guy.  And I still don't know it's direction feature set.

A little FYI on Williams brass engines; Bachmann does not carry any parts for the Williams brass engines, Bachmann recommends using a guy in Maryland for parts as he bought up most of the older Williams parts inventory.

You might be able to use a newer circuit board from WBB for forward and reverse.

Might be able to use a horn circuit board from Electric Railways(I hope I have it correct) a company that sells after market parts.

To keep this from happening again ask the man what kind of track is he using? Is it Lionel tubular with newer Lionel switches or is it Fastrack with Fastrack switches or maybe even Gargraves track and switches.

Something had to go wrong for that much damage to occur, like did it stall at a switch or derail at a switch or some other track crossing area?

Can you post some pictures?  It is possible the screw holding the motor to the truck became loose and the motor backed out and than stripped the gear.  That would explain roof contact and over current condition that damaged some wires.

The problem may be getting the axle gear if it doesn't match up to a Lionel version.  I assume Bachmann like MTH and even some newer Lionel have you replace the truck to replace damaged wheels or gears.  Individual parts not available, unless one of the gentleman who have extra parts happen to have the gear.  G

Matt, that's what I was trying to determine.  The motors turn but in one direction.  Without a lockout switch I didn't know if the board had F-N-R-N-F capabilty.  Chuck said it should so now I believe I have to replace the board also.  The board LOOKS OK, but I guess it lost it's direction capability.

John, does this GG1 have a horn/sound? If not, why not put a 4 amp Dallee unit in it, that would be a lot easier than trying to puzzle out what does what from Williams. If you can't get the worm wheel from Charlie Phillips, a truck block is your only alternative. This is not a common problem, but every once in a while I get one, and it isn't brand specific. Have had Lionel FTs, MTH SD90, and others, but not many. LMK if I can be of any help. Iron Horse Hobbies in Reading has the Dallee units in stock, but call first to save a trip, just in case. 373-6927.
