Just my opinion but, I certainly wouldn't refer to it as "the best one", however it sure is the stupidest.
I'm sure if he lost life or limb, the family would insist it was the railroad's fault and file a lawsuit.
We can at least hope he had to ride home standing to change his underwear...
Rusty
No common sense at all.
Stupidity at it finest!
At first I thought he was trying to hitch a ride with his bike in tow and then it became apparent what the heck he was trying to do.
Why would you ever try something as ignorant as that?
I don"t know .. this ? does the railroad own the property he was on , Was he trespassing if it is.. Was the guy taking pictures on it on purpose taking the video
..If not did the person taking the pictures report it to the police..
A special kind of stupid.

Yes.
Was he trespassing if it is..
He absolutely was trespassing.
Was the guy taking pictures on it on purpose taking the video
What?

Maybe he did. I believe this video has been on the internet for some time, i.e. it isn't all that recent.

Common sense really isn't all that common.
The think the situation shown is on par with the click bait title of this post.
And he is the valedictorian of his class. j
Wrong music. Should have been the Laurel and Hardy theme ("March of the Cuckoos")...
A friend of mine did a comic story once, "Why Morons Rule The Earth". He blames the invention of agriculture and the Industrial Revolution, since, before that, the lives of the stupid were nasty, brutish and short... ;-)

What?
On the boob tube theirs a show that highlights all kinds of "stupid" people. its a 1/2 show of them.
I am questioning if the guy thanking the picture and the kid on the bike where doing this as a stunt.. for that reason....

The guy in the car had would have had plenty of time to whip out his cell phone to get this when he saw what was happening.
If this was a set up, they most likely would have been taking video from well before the idiot went under the hopper and shot also it from trackside.
Whether it was set up or not, you can't fix stupid.
Rusty
I fail to understand what the uproar is over. The kid was told by his mama to be home by 4:00 and the only way he could make it on time was to do what he did. I call it American Ingenuity at it's best. He encountered a problem and he solved it. He should be commended, not ridiculed. I'm sure he'll learn from this experience and the next time he'll make it under the train much quicker and much more smoothly.

Greg...what if it was a video of your child or grand child? No, not that one, the good one.
Then I would have hugged him, told him I loved him and to never do that again!
You'll have to forgive me - I'm in a mood and everything is relative. That kid looks like he could be 14. At that age in my state he can hop in a glider all by himself, get towed to few thousand feet by another plane, and then get cut loose to fly all by himself with the hope he makes it back to the airport and lands safely. All that kid did was walk under a slow moving train.
-Greg
When I was around that age me and my buddies used to take a shortcut over the LIRR Montauk Branch- up and down a 15' embankment and over two tracks.....WITH ENERGIZED THIRD RAILS......
Didn't know how stupid I was back then.
A friend's dad had a saying when yelling at my friend....you think I'm dumb now, wait till you grow up and see how smart I was.

And if all of a sudden the slack was run out?
If you noticed, the hopper made contact with him at least once. He could have easily been dragged along or worse had something got snagged on the door mechanism.
"All that kid did was walk under a slow moving train." could have been his epitaph. What a 14 year old can do in your state is irrelevant and wouldn't be allowed in a glider untrained.
Rusty
This idiot will self destruct in 5 seconds....

Bingo! My point exactly. It's a kid. Science has proven decision making abilities don't full develop until you're 25. Hence, kids will do what is in their nature - plenty of which adults with (supposedly) fully functioning cognitive abilities will know to be "stupid". To wit, how many times did you tell your kids not to do something only to learn at some point they went and did it anyway? Is it inherently dangerous to walk under a moving train? Of course. But there are plenty of more dangerous things for kids to do, some of which are perfectly legal. The majority of us have done stuff just as stupid when we were "kids" and yet many of you seem to forget that every time someone gets or almost gets hurt, maimed or killed by a train and you go and point out how 'stupid' they were. If you've never done something "dangerously stupid" in your life, I applaud you and go ahead and continue to criticize away. Me, I choose not to jump all over a kid.
Now if it was an adult - all bets are off!

If my dad caught me doing something like that, what the train could've done to me would have been the least of my worries.

I salute him! He didn't let the media and the politicians tell him what to do! They're always promoting their "train safety" agenda, but they just want to control every aspect of our lives.
My only input is that I thought I was immortal until I turned 25.
That's just 50 shades of stupid!
In Scranton PA there are active tracks separating a local university and their athletic fields. Students crawling under cars is a common sight. A few years ago I was riding along on a qualifying trip and we were sitting on the runner. As the engineer was almost finished repeating the Form D, I noticed in the mirror an entire lacrosse team, coaches included, crawling under the train. Knowing that in a moment or two the engineer would be releasing the brakes and throttling up, I alerted the engineer and ran out to the running board, I shouted down to the coach telling him he shouldn't be doing this. His response was "we're going to be late, we have a game to play". I responded by telling him that if I hadn't noticed them under there, he would have had a funeral (or two) to attend. He just looked at me and continued on his way. Incredible!
Even on a good day, there are designated pedestrian crossings there where the view is blocked by cars stored there. Restricted speed can only do so much if someone suddenly darts out from behind a car. Although there has not been a life threatening incident in that area over the years, I maintain it is just a matter of time.

I sincerely hope your comment is sarcastic... with everything going on these days, I’m having more trouble separating sarcasm from actual opinions. The moronic stupidity of what this kid did aside, I am very concerned for the train crew. I cannot begin to imagine how the crew would feel if their train killed a child, even if it wasn’t in any way their fault.

Just my opinion but, maybe this is a perfect example of "current parenting" and why our younger generations have absolutely NO sense of responsibility. Many "modern parents" do NOT want to tell little Billy/Sally "no", as that might stunt their development. Good grief! Thus, the kid in the video gets no constructive criticism, nor guidance, nor punishment. Again, in my opinion, the parents are more to blame than the poor kid, as he was probably NEVER disciplined.
I'm not going to add any commentary gentlemen except to say as I watched that video my heart almost stopped (the boy looks a lot like my own son).
God forbid that door mechanism had snagged him-it sure came close.

yes the railroad owns and pays taxes on their rights of way.
Yes the kid with the bike is tresspassing.
If a Tractor trailer was blocking a crosswalk due to traffic and the truck has the green light would you crawl under the trailer to get to the other side?
I wonder if he's a model railroader / or has a knowledge of trains etc " This should be easy - I can do this "
Thank God he saved the bike
He must've been late for the short bus 🤔
It's the only way I can't hate him for his lack of judgement.😒
Remember the old commercial "Like father, like son."? 😁
Makes you wonder some eh?...😯
Its things like this make me lose faith in man kind.
Two things I’ve learned from this thread:
1. They’ve apparently electrified the Montauk branch of the LIRR. It was always diesel from Babylon to Montauk when I lived there. The Main Line to Ronkonkoma, Babylon Branch, Port Jeff line to Huntington, Port Washington branch, and Long Beach branch were all electric.
2. Lacrosse coaches at The University of Scranton are dumb.

I lived in Baldwin. That section had been electrified long ago. Babylon to Montauk is still diesel.
All kidding aside that kid is very lucky. Just like I was.
Baldwin is on the Babylon branch... unless they’ve renamed it. But I haven’t lived there since the mid-80’s... so that’s very possible!
Jon
I believe you are correct. I've always called it the Montauk Branch but since Babylon is a main terminus and yard it makes sense.
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than smart, but look at the schools today, They do not teach anything practical like common sense,
