s I am new to S gauge (only about 5 years of operating and collecting), what would be considered the Holy Grail of American Flyer S gauge trains? This topic was discussed for Lionel O gauge the other day.

The 1946 smoke-in-tender No.332 Northern. Aside, possibly, from a few preproduction single samples, the '46 Northern is the biggie.

The Gilbert Allegheny mock-up.
(Not really that exciting, two Hudson chassis' and a featureless wooden boiler and cab, but there is only one.)

In my opinion, the following:
1946 SIT 4-8-4 332
467 Comet "B" unit
Rocket "B" unit
These are the "Uber" grail items(I've only seen pics)
For us Mortals: 21140 (Plastic Tender shell)
1958 MP Set
1958-60 UP set
Various 5 digit Box cars
While, at one point I have had these, I chose to sell them, as I was scared to operate them. Absolutely beautiful paint on the Passenger sets, which the repro's have not captured. Al
Hi all. I have a lonely 492 NP B unit, which sits to be admired on my shelf. I have been trying to no avail to complete this set, at least with a 490 A unit, if not with the cars that go with it. So, if anyone has these (A unit and NP cars) available, please contact me off forum. If I cannot complete the set, I may consider a swap for my 492. .
Thanks.
Scared, **** NOOOOOOO, not me. Run them if you got them is my moto. God love those guy's, gails out there who spend thosands of dollars for factory seal sets, boxes, new old stock, in mint condition, get the boxes xrayed etc......stack them high in some room at home, how much fun is that??? Take them out and RUN THEM. Where not children any more, ripping the boxes open on christmas morning. We take care in opening our 40-60 year old trains now, and enjoy them as the run around your layout.

The 1956 Northern Pacific North Coast Limited passenger set has always been right up there in desirability.
I would agree that given a choice of any that I could have for free, that one would be mine. Funny thing is...although I'm mainly into "O", I can't think of any "O" set I'd like to have as much as this one.
Boy this is really bringing back the memories... As a kid I used to stare at these catalogs for hours. Little did I know that by 1972 allot of these sets were impossible to find. And if there were found they were priced way out of my paper route money budget.
Here are my most wanted 2 sets as a kid from the 1958 catalog:

The #625 orange Shell tank car.
Would the #24323 Bakers Chocolate tank car with white ends, the #24222 Dominio Sugar covered hopper and the #24578 Corvette flat car fit into this category?
