Tks. Looks like for October the best western is 1/2 the price of La Quinta.
I suspect there’s a reason.

You could book a room there for October - cancellable, of course - and check the place out when you go to York in April and decide for yourself.

My rule of thumb is that anything in York for less than approximately $120 per night during meet week should be avoided.

My 1st show in October I stayed at TRU, hotel was ok, I found the location lacking. Highway was always backed up. This time I'm staying at Yorktowne, Tu thru Sat. I spent most of my mealtime downtown, so now I won't have to drive there. I'm going to hit a couple of those bandit shows Tuesday and Wednesday and try to get to Strasberg this time.

Edit:

The TRU had no in room coffee for folks who stay there. Get a little Kuerig, it was worth it.

Please post a follow up regarding your experience at Yorktowne.

How do they handle parking?  Extra charge, in/out privileges, etc.?

Thanks.  I had checked the website a couple of months ago and there was nothing specific - must be a recent update.  Parking seems kind of pricey, considering that YT is probably the only lodging in York that charges for it.  I hope that the garage is secure and in/out privileges work out well.

I prepaid everything, including self-park with in/out. And it wasn't nearly as expensive as people were saying. 4 nights, less than 750 including parking and taxes. Plus, a 15-dollar food credit per day. I've stayed at many Hiltons over the years. I've left my vehicle for over 2 weeks using park and fly, the worst thing that ever happened was getting absolutely bombed by bird droppings when I parked under a tree. Never do that!

So, my post-York follow-up. !

The hotel is very nice, I never stayed before the update, so I can't compare pre/post, but compared to other hotels, it was very nice. Bar, lounge, and restaurant were great, although the menu should be expanded. I will be complaining about parking, I couldn't use the garage, so why was I paying? I ended up parking in the alley between the courthouse and the hotel. Oversize vehicles are given a window paper to park on the side, but it was always full. The alley was actually better, as there was very little traffic. There was an entrance right there, so there were no long walks. Plus, I could see my truck from my room, for what it's worth.

The room was very clean and modern. The bathroom/shower was big. Plenty of storage and closet space, unlike TRU. Keyless, and Bluetooth all worked well.

The area was great. I loved being within walking distance of so many great local restaurants, and no chains!

Definitely a good value.

Hope this helps people out.

Thanks for the update - glad you were happy with it.  Bummer on the parking.  A friend and his brother also stayed there - they were happy with the room and the price, although they wonder if it was a bit of a promotional rate to get people to try the place.  Between the parking situation and breakfast not being included, I'll probably continue to stay on the outskirts, but it's always good to know about the options.

Roost for breakfast. Also Famous Texas Weiners Dinette.

More than a dozen of us stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Cinema Drive (off of Market Street) as we have been twice a year for the last 10 years or so. Fairly priced, clean and comfortable.

Two nice restaurants within a 5 minute walk.

After dinner we all have a bring your own booze party and show 'n tell in the breakfast area off of the lobby until 11 or so. Join is in October!

Has anyone stayed at the Days Inn recently?  I think it was formerly the Billy Budd (before my time) and it used to be popular with York attendees.  Last time I stayed there (5 or 6 years ago) it was OK but there seemed to be a lot of long-term residents.  The recent Google reviews are trending down.

Can anyone provide a report on a recent stay?  Do they still serve a hot breakfast?

I stayed at Days Inn you are talking about last Oct '22.  Nothing to write home about. It was only me there, but it was obvious there were "long term tenants" at the site in the past, and currently.  Don't laugh too hard, but this is the actual refrigerator in my room.  This is a good sign of long term "temporary" tenants, as opposed to "hotel guests".

I guess they gotta make money.

My room was awkward because of the fridge, and everything inside the room is outdated, used, and needs an upgrade. It was clean to the point of that's about as clean as it will get.

Staff were friendly and nice, and they had some sort of breakfast in the morning, but I just never had the guts to try it. Did other things for breakfast.

It was functional, but if I was with my wife or traveling with a friend, I wouldn't recommend it.  I shied away from it in April and stayed at the LaQuinta. Much more modern, nicer, cleaner and I have stayed there before.

Thanks for sharing your actual experience rather than just spouting an uninformed opinion.  Yeah, it's gone downhill since my last stay.

I would advise against it... wouldn't you rather not know?

I stayed at La Quinta this time, first time trying it.  I think I'll consider it for the fall, decent place.

Agreed.  However, they've been steadily raising their rates.  I suspect it's partially due to the declining quality of some of the other options.  As the Wyndham has gone through the roof, LQ is now my York home.

GRJ, I'm already booked at LaQuinta for Oct.

Rates are not overly friendly.

If you think October is bad, just wait until you book for next April (I already have).

Well, the Wingate that I've stayed at a number of times is more expensive.

I stayed at the Day's Inn last fall, it's cheaper, but IMO it's a dump!  Also, there was absolutely no place to get anything, say you ran out of toothpaste, etc.  Not even a vending machine. I won't be back.

La Quinta is a decent place, and the prices were in line.  It's also convenient, I park in their parking lot and walk over from Quaker Steak on Thursday to check in.

I'm not staying at the Wyndham Garden anymore, last couple of times the quality had really gone down, it's badly in need of a major makeover.  Since I'm not a big drinker, and I'm usually out with a group elsewhere, the bar isn't a draw for me either.  There's no real reason to select them anymore, at least for me.

I usually stay in the Hampton Inn in Shrewsbury, off I-83....this time I stayed at the Homewood Suites in York (also a Hilton product), also off I-83, north of Route 30.....it was modern, clean and roomy. I'll be going back.

I stayed there once, I was on the I83 side and the traffic noise was too loud for me, so I crossed that one off my list.  The room was fine, the noise was not.

I used to stay at the Yorktowne Inn for close to 20 years since the room rate was around $89-$95 a night and that included their valet parking. That valet parking closed about 2 years before the Inn closed for a few years for renovation.

We moved and been staying at LaQuinta next to QSL. Very nice, clean and breakfast is quite good. Booked there for Friday night since I'm not going for York on Thursday, too short of a day and rather go on Saturday for 3-4 hours for the "cash talk" deals in the member halls. Folks beg you to buy on Saturday.

We usually stay about 20 minutes outside York.  While we drive a little we end up saving a decent amount for the same hotels closer.

Marty what area did you stay at? Hotel too if you don’t mind.

Ted I’m really liking this approach. I’m usually broke by Friday evening though LoL

John, I don't know what you are talking about. We  had a great room on the 1st floor facing the front parking lot. The bathroom had a glass enclosed shower, and a big mirror with fluoresent lighting all around it. The room was super nice. We have always had a nice room there. We have been staying there since it was a Sheridan about 35 or more years. I guess they new you were coming, so they gave you a bad room.

Lou, are they still serving dinners Monday-Thursdays? They used to during York week as many Eastern Division staff stay there. I have stayed there many times and agree road noise is minimal.

I've stayed in Hanover a few times at the Hampton Inn and typically stay at the Best Western New Cumberland.  While it is a drive down 83, we never had a traffic issue and it only takes about 20 minutes to the fairgrounds.  The cost is about $110 a night.

For some odd reason the last 2 fall York's, Thursday night was the usual rate and Friday jumped up to almost twice.  We're opting for the Laquinta in Mechanicsburg in the fall for $100 a night.  It's about 10 minutes further but worth the savings.

Thanks @MartyE! I don’t mind having a little drive especially if the savings are adding up like that!

I'm not sure what has happened the last few years that some of the out lying hotels are normal rate Thursday and then double Friday in October.  We did some shopping and found the LaQuinta to be same rate both nights.  I even went so far as to look to see if other events were being held or what.  Seems no rhyme or reason for the increase on Friday.
