I tried to resist the urge to fly out to the October York meet, but I didn't have the will power.  Bought my airplane ticket yesterday and got a good deal flying from San Diego to Harrisburg instead of BWI or Philadelphia.

Wondering if Harrisburg would be a good alternative to staying in York.  any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  This is only my 2nd York Meet so still learnin' the ropes.

If you're just looking for a clean place to rest your head (not a luxurious hotel), the Days Inn in New Cumberland (1st exit South of Harrisburg, it's the exit just south of the PA Tpke exit for 83, pretty sure it's Lewisberry Rd) has been good enough for me that I always stay there.

With advance booking, it's easily at least $50-$80 less per night than a hotel closer to the Fairgrounds.   I can't say if you'll be able to get a room at a low rate less than a week before the meet (I'm guessing since you bought airfare today, that's not going to be a deal breaker ), but it is a pretty straight shot about a 20-25 minute drive down 83 to the Fairgrounds from there.

I attended my first York three years ago. I didn't know I was going until a few days before I got in the truck and drove there. I opted to stay in a hotel in Harrisburg (a Motel 6) instead of paying the premium for a room in York. It was very clean and quiet, but it was about 40 minutes away. After hunting for treasures all day and then going to some of the side "shows" (like the Marx show and tell meeting, and OGR's Thursday at Fridays), that drive was a bit much for me.

There are 2 I know of (maybe there are more), the Hillside Cafe (the easiest on/off of 83 when headed North) website still lists them as closed due to the fire of (i think) around a year ago.  The other is called Culhane's, and is not quite as simple on/off, but is workable if you map it before going (there are some signs, but you have to know the exit before you hit it - pretty sure once you see the sign for it, you're past the exit)

Just a update on the "El Cheapo" Super8 I stayed in: 2 miles from the fairgrounds, room clean with old-style TV (big, but not flat screen), refrigerator, microwave, crappy view (rt.30), free "simple" breakfast (danish, yogurt, cereal, toaster stuff, juice, coffee, tea). Senior rate $75. I stayed here before and will do so again. I booked the room one week prior, and saw a lot of train folks.

Do you happen to know what the rate would have been for "non-senior"?

Thanks.

I think about $7. more. The main reason I stay there is because it is CLOSE BY...especially since it can take over 15 minutes just to get OUT of York. However, if your wife is with you, you may want to go to a "better" place.

I stay at the Red Roof Inn, Harrisburg. It is on the same side of the river as the airport, about 4 mile north of the airport. Rates: $50 spring to $62 fall single with AARP discount. Staying there for 15 years, so it can't be all bad. I like the Internet access.

Travel from there is about a half an hour. Even with US 30 construction. Hotel row has lot of places to eat, cheap to expensive. I tend to eat moderate to cheap.

Thanks.  I may have to check them out for April.

I remember the Super 8 from when I was in college(parents would stay there sometimes when dropping me off for semester), so no culture shock.  I also normally do Days Inn for York trips, the one I use is just not the one in York, so I'm fine with this general class of motel. Clean room/bed and functional bathroom is sufficient for me.

I stayed there the first year it opened (around 1990) and have stayed there on and off several times since then.  Gets a little smellier and scarier each year, but so far, so good - I can tolerate it for a couple of nights.  Was the parking lot safe this time?

Hey,  everybody camp at jmiller's place next time

My wife was really pleased with the Comfort Suites Harrisburg.  Didn't know at reservation time the place is almost new.  The immediate neighborhood is commercial but shops and restaurants are close.  We toured nearby Indian Echo Caverns too.

Oh yeah, John's Diner in New Cumberland was fine as always.   Capitol Diner in Harrisburg was good too.
