Plugging the harness from the tender to the engine was easy enough but I can't figure out how to pull the plug back out again. The manual is certainly no help. Is there something obvious I missing? Thanks!

Which one? The 6-82309 from a few years back or the recent 2031340 one? I have the 6-82309, and a wiggle up and down gets it out. The 2031340 appears to have the same drawbar connector.
Thanks John. According to the listing it's a 2031370. Sloped tender. No obvious external volume control and no battery connection in the tender. The chuff has been dropping out and I think I've finally traced it to the connector. The cable is cramped so the wires at the engine are pretty sideways. Nudging the cable restores the chuff. Pretty bad design vs the MTH PS2 connector.
