While surfing today, looking for other reference shots of the lionel cattle platform I now have{to rehab} I see there's another version ou there that has a removable top where the cows travel on...mine is fixed via rubber isolators.
How many versions are there of this platform and when did they come out?

Just 2. the early '49 version like you have, and the later '50-'55 version that tend to operate better.

Orange gates were first and came with the Armour cattle car. The deck was made of aluminum. The later decks were tin plated steel and hard to find in pristine condition today. I suspect the stiffer steel decks transmitted the vibrations better than the alloy ones.

I have the early version then, since it has 3 of the 4 orange gates...4 new gates are on the way!
As soon as I button up the rehab on the milk car platform I'll take the cattle platform apart and go thru it with new paint and a new bumper...then a cattle car{lol}.
