When and, for what? A 4000 class can't be turned there, as I think they discovered that 4014 could not SAFELY negotiate the "balloon track".

Absolutely. Colton Yard is an ex-SP yard that was built post-steam.

why turn it in colton?  they turned it when it left Pomona.

big,

You are missing the point. You stated that "those guys from train mag seem to think she will return to colton.", but why? The 4014 is currently enroute to Cheyenne for for complete overhaul. The overhaul MUST be completed in time for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the gold spike May 10, 1869, i.e. 2019. So, I ask you again, why would 4014 "return to Colton", and when?

they made it sound like an excursion would bring it back to southern ca.

and I am sure they would sell plenty of tickets for that ride on the cajon pass.

Just a reminder, it is against federal law for any class 1 railroad to sell/market passenger train tickets (that happened when Congress started Amtrak). Some sort of outside concern must rent/lease the train from the UP, cover the expense of liability insurance, and then sell enough tickets to the public to recover THEIR costs.

Found out today that the train is pretty low priority. A 15 minute stop in Delta UT turned into a hour and half stop while 3 trains were worked around it. Don't blame them, gotta give priority to the revenue trains.

Was also told by the support crew on the ground, the lead engine is not allowed to use dynamic braking, only the rear engine (4884) not sure why, perhaps stress on the UPP 4014?  Also heard there is some sport of problem with the UP 4014 right now (didn't hear exactly what) . It sounded minor by nagging, won't put it out of service though.

That is due to the fact that 4-8-8-4 #4014 does NOT had an alignment controlled draft gear as part of her front coupler assembly. The alignment control draft gears were not developed back in the steam days, since there was really no such thing as dynamic braking until the FT came along (and even the first FT demo in 1941 didn't have DB either).

Now compound that with the foreshortened crew runs between "stop overs", and the cost of dead-heading crews, by way of crew vans, will wind up being a huge expense.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the move cost more then a million dollars. The steam crew tied up for the better part of a year. The help they got with the snap track at the fair grounds and all. With the donated equipment just getting it to Cheyenne a million at least. Probably closer to 2. I saw some where the 4014 project is projected to cost 7 million dollars. Just think what 3985 would be like if they spent half that on it!

It was over 3 hours late getting into Salt Lake. 4014 has a very obvious problem with its front left side wheel they rigged up an oil line on the outside of it  and it has been chewed op pretty bad.

The rides are almost always free. The only time I know of there are sales is the Denver post excursion. I've rode on an excursion for free myself.

I guess the pictures chris has on the other thread doesn't show that.
