I've noticed that Husky Stack Cars are almost always shown carrying double stacked containers but all the models I've seen have a '5th wheel' at each end - I assume these are to support a road trailer.

Maybe it's my sheltered upbringing but I can't recall ever seeing a picture of a road trailer riding on one of these cars.

Can anyone tell me if road trailers ride (rode) on Husky cars?

Thanks for your input.

Keep in mind that Husky stacks were introduced years after the 5-car articulated wells were introduced.  They were offered for carrying extra heavy containers (hence the word husky).  The current 53ft-well husky stack doesn't even list highway trailer capacity on the gbrx website.

I don't know why anyone would put a road trailer on them nowadays when spine cars are so much more efficient from a weight and lenght standpoint.

They may have been commonly loaded with trailers in the early 90's when they came about, but it is relatively hard to find intermodal photos from that era.

I'm planning on modelling a 80's/90's intermodal scene so one or two 40' trailers on Husky cars seems right.

My primary modeling era is similar (early 90s ATSF). Just one or two trailers in husky stack cars on even a long train would be about right. If one wants to be really precise, I believe this model came into service about 1993.

Actually 5-6 years ago it was faily common to see 53' road trailers in Husky-stack cars on CSX River line [Selkirk,NY to Port Newark/Oak Island NJ] intermodal trains, virtually all are solid trains [intermodal, tank or autocarriers -Ballman YD Little Ferry,NJ]. Mixed freight sees occasional empty auto carriers going up to Selkirk.

I see this plenty on the CSX Chicago line. Every train that has trailers somewhere almost always has at least one stuffed into a Gunderson well car at some point in the train. It's commonly UPS trailers but I've seen all sorts. Occasionally two of the short vans get put into a well car together, that always looks pretty cool. I probably have a picture of some but I have about 7000 pictures I'd have to look through.
