I like passenger cars - do you?

Yes, I did not include any of the scale cars available today, as nice as they are, because I cannot run them on Warrenville Railroad's curves.

I must, my inventory shows 116 different ones: 39 three-rail and 77 two-rail. 18 of the three-rail are K-Line 21" observations, one was two-railed (the NH WATCH HILL):
Note that two of the K-Line boxes contain non-K-Line two-rail New Haven cars.

John;
Love your collection. I'm in you camp when it comes to collecting passenger cars. It all started when I got my first Lionel paasenger set, the iconic Canadian Pacific F3s with the matching Canadian Pacific passenger cars. Today, that collection has grown to over 300 passenger cars ranging from 027 cars to the 21" scale cars from both Lionel and K Line. Thanks for showing us your collection.
Since this thread is populated by people in the know regarding passenger cars, I really like the Santa Fe aluminum ones. I have Lionel 19176, 7, 8, and 9. I spent an enormous amount of time putting in LED lighting and seats with passengers (instead of the window silhouettes). They look very nice, but I'm not going to do that again. Is there an updated Lionel set of these things with passengers already installed (I'm now a whiz at installing LED, so that's not a concern).
On one of the shelves you have clear F units and clear Madison cars. Who is the manufacturer. Thanks, Bill

Bill,
This set was made by Lionel (LTI, I think) 20 years or so ago.
They pop up on EBAY every once in a while
I have lost count, but I am well over 200 scale length passenger cars and numerous shorter cars. That is only the O scale ones.
Ok, so I went to count. On the shelves, ranging from Weaver and Williams 21" sets through MTH 18" Premier sets, Custom Trains sets, K-Line sets and Williams Post War repops I counted 541. I did not go into the store room to count boxed stuff I don't have room for on the shelves. You know they must multiply when you are not looking. I like passenger trains so most of them have an engine in front of them. I counted 426 engines covering MTH, Weaver, Williams and K Line and a some Lionel. If I count the Hallmark Christmas items the total increases.
Wow! 200....300...541?!!😲
You guys have more passenger cars than I have passenger, freight, and locomotives combined.
" Hey honey, look at all of the trains the guys on the forum have. I told you I don't have too many....yet"...😉
Does anyone have the set that started the heavyweight trend - Jerry Williams' Pullman observation car, three coaches and the REA baggage car? All 17" between sills. John

Be careful of the Lionel 18" aluminum cars. Some of the trucks have the zinc pest (they fall apart) and you cannot get replacements. It's a sad experience.
Gerry
Lionel needs to produce an Amtrak viewliner set with a baggage car. These cars are too unique not to be in production. Semi scale would work well.
Great collection John.
I have several sets ranging from post-war ATSF to modern K-line and Lionel. All are short cars that fit my 027 curves. The K-line cars are very well done with full interiors and good details like diaphragms.
I just bought this set from a Forum member. They are Lionel cars, looks like the K-line tooling.
The plan is to start populating the sets with interiors and switching to LED's with power regulators.
Bob
Have like 7 sets from PW Lionel and Lionel 027, Railking that I painted the interior and added people and a Williams set that I added seat and led lighting to the set.

I've tried that line too.....It hasn't helped........

I am not sure which cars you mean. The original Williams passenger cars were duplicates of the early Lionel Madison cars which required some assembly. In '92 Williams had ordered 18" heavyweights but did not complete the purchase. They were later sold as, 'Custom Trains' sets.
The five car set which came in a card stock white box with black and red lettering, John

This was known as: LIONEL # 38150/29086 PLATIMUM GHOST CLEAR SHELL F-3s & MADISON PASSENGER CARS. Orange boxes.
Two on the bay now, average of $1,000 with shipping
Love "The Meteor", Robert - did you make it?

Love the B&O Bob! That’s one line I don’t have. Maybe I need to look for some at York.
My version of the Amtrak Coast Starlight train:
Lionel motive power with MTH Superliners - a great combination! I added many passengers that are enjoying the comfortable seats!
I like ‘em too, John!!! Here’s a few of mine…
My first set..
Followed by two sets of Lionel aluminum cars from the late 70’s - 80’s…
And here’s a few newer additions to the fleet…
And I know there are a couple of others (the original Acela, 21” Alaska, another NH, another D&H, and a 21” NYC set on order from the last catalog ). I’m beginning to think I need a bigger basement
For some reason I always had this feeling that I was partial to freight cars until I prepared to post under this topic . Holy cow was I ever surprised I had so many passenger cars. I am going to do these one photo at a time ‘cause there’s a bunch of them. First up are my two favorite passenger sets largely due to their brilliant color schemes. A Southern Pacific Daylight GS2 is hauling a consist of Southern Pacific Madison cars in Daylight colors. This set was somewhat maligned when released in the early 1990s but I still like it. On the inner loop Lionel’s Great Northern Empire Builder aluminum passenger set in striking Omaha orange and Pullman green is being pulled by a set of F3 ABBAs from Lionel. Motive power and passenger cars from the early 1990s.
Next up are two of my other favorites being pulled by post-war F3s from Lionel. On the outer loop Santa Fe 2343 AAs haul a passenger consist of aluminum Lionel Lines cars produced in the early 1990s. On the inner loop a set of Lionel 2344 AAs also from the early 1950s pulls a string of Williams ABS streamliners made in the 90s.

That would have been 1992. Williams placed the order for the cars but never paid Samhongsa for them. Mike and Frank's Roundhouse brought them over and sold the five car sets as 'Custom Trains'. The cars are marked 'Williams' but he had nothing to do with the sale of the cars. 'A Toy Train Story' page 30.
Three other passenger sets are prominently displayed on the top three shelves in my train room. The top set are 15 inch aluminum cars from Weaver headed up by E8 AAs from Weaver circa 1990. The passenger consist and E8s sport the Pennsylvania Railroad livery. The next two shelves contain 15 inch aluminum passenger cars from Williams representing the Baltimore & Ohio and Texas Special respectively. The F3s pulling these passenger are also from Williams circa 1990s.
Here is a video of a Passenger train I ran at our club, the TMB, in March 2022. Go to the 2:35 minute of the video to see my special excusion train headed up by a MTH Big Boy. Most of the passenger cars in this video came from sets I have in my collectionm.

This is a Lionel “Texas Special” obs which I transformed to SL-SF Meteor car.
I just have a 7-car Superliner consist. I need an Amtrak locomotive to pull them. I would also like a Northern Pacific passenger consist.

Bill, Thank you very much for this post. The transaction cited almost locks MTH with Samhonsa for future production of 17" heavyweight cars. I do not and never have had any MTH passenger, diner, combo or observation cars(heavyweights) but I do have the heavyweight baggage car (REA) from that original five car set and an MTH heavyweight baggage car. One is a clone of the other, rivet for rivet. John

Had a set of the Lionel ' PENNSYLVANIA ' streamlined aluminum cars . Loved them . Had a few of the banners lifting but no problem. Sold them off to enlarge my HO collection at the time. Great looking collection you have in your photos John.
