I had previously posted my impressions of the new Legacy E9s, and mentioned that the bellows-type diaphragms between the units did not quite meet.  I was playing with them this morning - I plan to make a 1/4 thick dark gray insert to go between the two units' diaphragms to "seal the deal."

I noticed that these diaphragms are not just cast rubber bellows like on other F and E units I have seen, but two pieces solid plastic pieces.  There is a solid, non-moving piece that screws to the back of the unit and a springloaded, swiveling piece that turns.  Very nice!  Maybe this has been used on other units but I have never seen this.

Sorry, I posted the picture and it displayed this morning after I posted it.  I have no idea what has gone wrong or why.  When I get home I will try to post it again.  I took it specifically to show how the new piece swivels.

EDIT: here, try this  . . . . It's not the photo I originally posted but its the best I can do for now.

These diaphragms are similar to Lionel's newer F3s and F7s.  Except on the UP engines, they should be "harbor mist gray," matching the roofs of the engines.  Are they?

My conventional Santa Fe scale F3 (6-34521) has these more prototypical-looking diaphragms that are silver and not black, just like on the real engines.  I wish Lionel or some other manufacturer would make these kinds of more realistic-looking diaphragms we could attach to our older aluminum Lionel or Willaims passenger cars.

Looks like Lionel is finally getting the diaphragms right, at least on its engines, after all these years.
