BL, how do you get the decal to "wrap around" rivets and braces?

these are gorgeous. I wish you could post bigger and more detailed pictures. Are they made of wood? Styrene? Brass? All of the above?
Could you explain the role and purpose of a so called "transfer" caboose? I have never really understood what they are for.
