I just picked up my son a Thomas Lionchief set and was horrified to see that the wall wart is only capable of 10.8W. I started to think along the lines of what BanjoFlyer did here. It turns out that I had an old 12VDC power supply with the right 5.5mm OD x 2.5mm ID plug, so I cut the plug off and attached the plug to wires that I can connect to a AC variable voltage transformer.

I also did some searching on Amazon and Ebay and found this Universal AC Adapter power supply (Here's an alternate with a two-pronged power cord pictured). In the description it lists one of the output voltages as 18VDC, but on the label in the picture it says 18.5VDC. (It also has two 5.5mm OD x 2.5mm ID adapter plugs, I'm guessing that one has the pin inside and the other doesn't.)

Are there any known risks to running Lionchief engines on 18.5V instead of 18V? (Or is the power drop likely to bring it down closer to 18V?)

If you use eBay, here's a 90W supply that has a switch selector to choose from a variety of DC output voltages.  Includes a variety of output plugs.  Coincidentally, this picture shows the output set to 18V DC.

Less than $10 with free-shipping from a US seller.  With eBay, if buying from an Asia seller, be sure to select/specify the USA wall-plug.

I'd pick a different one. There are plenty of choices. I searched for "18v 5a power supply" and got many 90 watt variations.

Consolidated Leo, where were you searching? I tried a handful of platforms, including Ebay, Amazon, Google, Newegg, DigiKey, and Mouser, and found only a few 18V 5A power supplies/AC adapters with a 5.5mm OD/2.5mm ID output plug.

My search was on EBay.

But I thought you didn't care about the connector type as you had one already. Also, the topic from BanjoFlyer indicates that he spliced a new connector to the supply that he got. I guess I misunderstood what you were looking for.

I doubt that a LionChief would not be able to handle the extra half a volt. Since they run on AC or DC, there would be some diodes in there to reduce that voltage by at least that much.

Good luck!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The connector that I had, I attached to wires with spade terminals, and a circuit breaker in series, which I can attach to one of my spare transformers, a 20W K-Line, and an 80W WBB. But the 18V/5A power supplies are a lot lighter than lugging around the 20 lb. WBB transformer, and for under $20, let alone under $10, why not pick one up.
