I talked with a Dremel representative at their booth at MakerFaire this past weekend (you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting two or three 3D printers in some areas of that place).
Their machine only works with one of the two common types of plastic filament feedstock, PLA (cornstarch based). Many/most other printers will print both ABS and PLA, at a lower retail price than Dremel's unit.
I found Autodesk has put out a freeware application called 123Design, which can output directly to many 3D printers with the addition of a "slicer" plugin (also freeware from Autodesk). I figured I'd download it to play with and learn something about 3D modeling so I have something of a clue when a decent printer falls into my price range
