ISO stands for International Standards Organization, which sets the standards for all kinds of things. Remember photo film? It used to be rated as ASA (American Standards Association), then all of a sudden it was the same set of numbers but called ISO. The ISO had simply adopted the American standard as an international standard, thereby rendering the standard promulgated by DIN (Deutsche Industrie Normen), which had previously been used in Europe, obsolete.
