1992 Mikado tooling:

I think they should use a 2-Axle tender truck on this one like when it was originally used.  Also they should add the handrails on the front like this:

Maybe even a whistle recording of Southern 4501, along with the same chuff sound as the LEGACY Built to Order 4-6-0.  They should also make the drivers lighter like before.

1. Southern Railway 4501 (black)

2. Southern Railway 4501 (green)

3. Maybe even some other roadnames, but remove the handrails mentioned above for them.  2-Axle or 3-Axle tender truck depending on the roadname.

 

N&W A Class 2-6-6-4:

 #1218 and a few other road numbers.  The drivers should also be lighter like before.

 

 

N&W Auxiliary Tender:

1. N&W Black in 2 road numbers

2. N&W with Stripe to match the 2012 N&W J-class 4-8-4

3. Black Unlettered

All 4 are examples of what I DO want Lionel to do again.

Lionel has by far the most accurate model of the 4501, despite it being 23 years old and lacking the intricate detail on current scale locos. I can easily see Lionel modifying it for whistle steam, much like the 700E Hudson.

Speaking of which, RickO speaks for all NYC fans for the J3A to come back, and the Niagara WITHOUT the issues of the first release. It's been at least a dozen years since we saw either these designs.

1 - FWIW, I understand that the N&W 2-6-6-4 is one of the MTH/Lionel lawsuit engines (along with the Allegheny and PRR T-1), and the tooling is in limbo, unavailable or otherwise tied up. I have no idea if any of this is true or not. But it's been the word on the street from time to time.

2 - The Niagara, oh yes, with problems fixed, and please available in a "Pilot" version (I would definitely buy that one).

3 - The J3a - in the later, "Phase II" version. Most/all had PT tenders, Worthington feedwater heaters and changed running boards/tanks/reverse gear. I have 2 of the earlier Elesco/original tender versions - love them both, so, unless the actual tooling is changed to reflect their Postwar appearance and lettering style, I would probably pass and not buy it just for electronics upgrades.

And shorten that blasted J3a drawbar! And fix the headlight casting - it's wrong - too early.

My repair man says that nothing on the Lionel will fit on the MTH version.

I was away from the hobby during the days of the MTH lawsuit. I have not been able to find any information that relates to specific locomotives as mentioned in this thread. Can someone catch me up on that or point me to a link that talks about it.

Will we see any of these steam locomotives again or are they still caught up in legal matters?

The Niagara keeps coming up in discussions like this. I hope folks are not saying bring back the same engine but with modern electronics and fix the mechanical issues. If they bring it back they should also upgrade the detail as well. Of the three scale 3 rail Niagara's produced, Lionel's is the least detailed. The MTH model released 5 years prior is better detailed as is the 3rd Rail engine released even earlier than MTH's. You know a Legacy 4-8-4 is going to have a premium price. I hope it has the accuracy to match. So far, with few exceptions, most of the Legacy remakes are little improved over their previous non Legacy engines.
