Well, if MTH had the electronics at a more reasonable price, that wouldn't happen.  If you have a dead $700 locomotive, and you can wait for months and pay $180 for the parts or buy a PS/2 locomotive for $125 and gut it, which would you do?  I see your point, but practicality has to enter into the picture as well.

It's sad that so many MTH locos fail their electronics, that's caused loads of frustration in the hobby. Some of us enjoy our trains just fine without the electronic complexities.

The real expense in this scenario will be fighting the inevitable lawsuits that will follow from Lionel and MTH!

Sounds like a great small business opportunity for someone to go out and secure funding in order to reverse engineer and manufacture all the discontinued, outdated and obsolete electronics from Lionel and MTH!

 

After all, how hard could it be? 

 

Then just sit back and wait for the orders to come rolling in.
