I have the legacy hand held unit I thought at first it may have been just one engine acting that way but I have tried a few more and two were just recent purchases this year.Engine start ups are fine but when I start to increase the speed slowly there is no response at first then the engine will lunge forward then settle down but as I try to go faster the engines still lunges then slows back down. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Paul

Have you tried the hitting the M button and then setting your momentum?
No I did not do that. I will go and try in a bit. Question.... I have a few engines on the layout and I only run them one at a time. Because I have not programed them individualy will I have to do that to all as I use them. Thanks for the help, Paul
If these are TMCC engines they will operate signifigantly smoother in "TMCC Mode" as opposed to "Cab 1 mode" on your legacy remote. Obviously legacy engine will run best in "Legacy mode".
You will have to program them with different i.d.#'s so you can run more than one at a time and to retain engine specific settings like the momentum.
Thanks Trainmaster. I went up and tried that m but not any better. I found my instruction booklet and am going to read it again Some are legacy and some are TMCC. By chance is there some kind of a button or switch to change from one mode to the other. Thanks again for your help. Paul
Lionel help videos are here, these will make more sense than the manual or myself
Just a thought, make sure your track is at full power before you send any commands to the engine.
I have a post going in the legacy forum I had somewhat same issue mine only in forward and a growl.
so try this it cleared mine up add grease via the 2 screws located at the rear most set of drive wheels then let it run for a complete loop of track if persists on cab-2 you will see a letter R push it the loco will give a whistle\horn sound saying it accepted the command and reset the engine mine is running Jerk free now go figure!! I can't say it will help your issue but hey it sure can't hurt to try it at this point.

I had the same thing on my F3 Legacy. After a couple laps around the track it stopped.
