I've been gathering K-Line 21" Santa Fe / AT&SF passenger cars, I hope this post lends a hand to others and through replies increases all our knowledge about these great scale passenger cars.

In going to Legacy K-Line Trains.com there were a number of sets of 21" passengers cars made in the early 2000's, the site has been valuable in showing the sets but excludes details about which actual cars are in each set and the photos are blurry enough to prevent one from really being able to tell which car is in which set in many cases. Having not been into O Scale during this period I don't have a collection of old catalogs to lend a hand

Here is what I know of, please add what you have and perhaps we can get a full accounting for these wonderful cars.

Updated the car listing with a couple more, still would love to have more insight into this topic, both for myself and others.

Thanks to the help of several other Forum members, it has also been noted that these cars come in two finishes. This was not a thrilling discovery as it adds a complication to buying already hard to find cars.

Jason,

Thanks for compiling the K -Line 21" car listing.

Can you tell me if K-Line ever actually produced the elusive Santa Fe 21" Hi-Level

Club Lounge #575 as displayed in the 1st edition 2005 K-Line catalog?

Does anyone have a pix of the actual car?

Per the catalog, the #575 Hi Level Club lounge was part of the K-4630S 4-Pac.

thanks,

Bill

Didn't Lionel try to revive the Kline name and built a lot of cars.  Not sure if they ever reissued the 21 inch cars.  I guess there was not enough money in the KLine by Lionel name so they eventually dropped the line.  I did buy a lot of the Kline by Lionel Ringling Bros. Circus cars.  I am glad they were reissued.  Would like a reissued 21 inch car set in Santa Fe or UP or SP, Actually, SP, I would prefer, a 21 inch Daylight set.

I have two Santa Fe 21" business cars ... appears they didn't make the third to complete the "name set" ...

Y'know, I have sometimes regretted not getting the 15" K-Line ATSF cars - 21" is

just so long in the layout universe. But, sometimes I look at them and am just so impressed. I have five, and all have been run once, years ago, behind my RS 5.0 3751, on our club layout. Layout gone, cars and 3751 on shelves.

I have the "SANTA FE" business, 3465 baggage, 508 dome, 1568 diner, NAVAJO obs.

I did not realize that K-Line had made so many types/variations of these aluminum

cars.

Someone should desktop-publish modest booklet on these cars (and their shorter brethren), with photos - good $10 train show fodder.

I really miss K-Line.

I would be more than happy to put together a modest eBook on these and perhaps others if I can get some help with photos of what we know to be out there but which I don't own.

A free down load so others won't face the same challenges I've had in even getting the car names / numbers straight. The two finishes shocker was a nasty surprise several weeks ago, just when I thought I had one great train

Will keep updating this as I get more information.

  • Here is my list I have saved.  If you are a K Line guy like myself, save this info to a file.

Marty...really enjoyed talking to you today and thanks for all of your help!

Jason...  Marty beat me to it!!..but my list would have been smaller for sure!  As you can see, and also on the K-line legacy site, there were 12 of the Hi-level Santa Fe cars produced.  If you click on the K-line number that Marty has provided, it will take you directly to the catalog description as well as a photo of each car (more like an artist rendering).

Alan

Marty and Alan,

I really appreciate your help in getting the overall car numbers square, it is a lot more than is shown on the K-Line Legacy Site, the issue of which are in each set remains, but I may be able to work through that shortly.

Since you both have full sets can you also let me/us know which of the cars you have in the dull vs bright finish? I am wondering if all the non-HL cars come in both or just some and if not all then which ones.

The lack of information has proven to be a real challenge. I hope to do the leg work so no one else has to again.

Thanks,
Jason

This is an interesting thread, and I've always liked the shiny, polished look of the Santa Fe streamliners. I must confess, however, that I don't get the appeal of the bilevel El Capitan. The tall cars strike me as ungainly looking compared to the regular-height cars. They look more like commuter cars than something for a long-distance passenger train. They certainly were not comfortable to ride. I still remember a trip from Chicago to Los Angeles on the El Cap for the Rose Bowl as one of the most unpleasant travel experiences of my life. Now, my standards for "unpleasant travel experiences" are pretty rough. I've gotten up at 0500 to catch Air Belarus from Kiev to Minsk, and I once flew on a semi-scheduled charter from Abidjan to Monrovia during the Liberian civil war. The airplane was a decrepit YAK flown by Polish mercenaries whose sobriety was in doubt (though their flying skills had to be excellent to get that piece of Soviet junk in the air at all), and we got to watch out the window while our baggage was unloaded to make way for chickens. I'd rank both of those experiences as better than my trip on the El Capitan. As I said, I just don't get the appeal.

Hi,

Could someone please recommend a good book or books that would have more information on the prototype Santa Fe Hi-Level passenger cars? After seeing the impressive collection of Alan in this thread, I would like to learn more about these cars. So far I found an article on the Jan 1, 1957 edition of the Popular Science magazine & I just ordered a Used copy. When I ran a search on Amazon I found some books that are no longer published that were about the El-Capitan & Super Chief trains. There were others about passenger cars & streamliners. However I couldn’t see the Table of Contents to determine if they dedicated a good portion of the book or even a chapter to these cars. When I search on Google, Flickr or Wikipedia I wasn’t able to find much more either. Sure there is information about the “Pacific Parlour” lounge used in the Amtrak “Coast Starlight” but not much about the other cars, especially the diner / dining car that appear to have 6-axle trucks from the scans of the old black & white photos. Are there any resources currently available that would have photos, drawings or specifications of these cars?

Thanks,

Naveen Rajan

I would be more than happy to put together a modest eBook on these and perhaps others if I can get some help with photos of what we know to be out there but which I don't own.

A free down load so others won't face the same challenges I've had in even getting the car names / numbers straight. The two finishes shocker was a nasty surprise several weeks ago, just when I thought I had one great train

Will keep updating this as I get more information.

Two cars that I have that I have not seen listed here or the Legacy/K-Line site are Super Chief 21" sleepers, the "Chimayo" (K4630-40006) and "Hotevilla" (K4630-40007).  They appear to have the dull finish, in contrast to the bright finish on my K-4630P, Q & R sets.

I'm not sure which set these are from, I picked them up at April's York Meet from Eastern Depot as individual cars.

As for the hi-level cars, at the time they were available I made an error in judgement and did not buy them, as I was thinking I was satisfied with the Williams Hi-Level SF cars with the silhouette windows.  I should have checked my crystal ball!!

I have that 2 sleeper set as well.  I believe that it is:

I have that car.  It was produced in one of the Great Northern Empire Builder sets.  I believe that it was K-4633C.  Tough to see but I believe that it is visible here:

4630-40534     Step Down Coach, #534

This is an interesting Hi-Level car.  I have two of these and they are all Hi-Level on both ends, meaning no step-down on one end.  On the other hand, I have three of the 4630-40535 Step Down Coach, #535 cars and they are all Hi-Level on one end and step-down on the other.  I was planning on switching one of the ends from the 535 to the 534 to get the two correct step down cars needed for each train.  (Although some of the prototype step-down cars were "convertible" versions from Hi to low ends so I guess that you could run them with the Hi-Level end on the end of the train if you want, meaning that the end was in the "Hi" position.  I don't believe that the ATSF ever ran them with the end in the "Hi" position at the end of the train.  At least I never saw a photo.)

I once saw a K-Line 534 car with a step-down end, but I am not sure if it had been modified.  Maybe K-Line only corrected this "error" with the later-issued 535 car?

Could someone please recommend a good book or books that would have more information on the prototype Santa Fe Hi-Level passenger cars?

The Passenger Car Library  Vol. 5  Santa Fe - Southern Pacific by W. David Randall (RPC Publications) is the best reference for all the Budd Company and American Car & Foundry cars built for the Santa Fe post 1930, including all the high level cars.  It has scale drawings of all the interiors and exteriors of the cars as well as excellent photos.  It can also be expensive; however, I recently saw a copy in good shape (so so cover) for $40.  Most dealers want in the $90 range or, more often, want to sell all the volumes as a set.

RPC also has a volume covering the ATSF Pullman fleet.

Allan

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for a single car that I can buy and repaint. If they did it in GN, they probably made it in other paint schemes as well.

YES, That is my understanding that they earlier made cars were made wrong and K-Line corrected them in the later runs. Popsrr

Allan,

Could you please tell me where you saw the “Passenger Car Library Vol. 5” that was available for $40? Amazon does not have it in stock & the ones on E-Bay are listed for $200.

Thanks,
