In going through my aluminum body passenger cars a few days ago I noticed that there appears to be two different finishes -- on the exact same car, road name, model, etc., both are new in their original box, so I was very surprised to discover this.

In the two images, especially the roof shots, the difference can be seen, fairly clearly.

Does any one have any idea if there are two finishes, seems odd given that these are aluminum, or do the more "frosted" ones need polished.

In looking over 14+ cars about half have this frosted look which is even throughout the car, roof, sides, etc. Which is what leads to my questioning if this is a factory finish.

Thank you,

Jason

Jason...I own a bunch of these cars and found that there were several runs of some of the road names throughout their history.  The early runs of the ATSF cars were in fact lightly painted to dull them down.  The last run of the same ATSF cars were unpainted and highly polished.  This led me to put together two separate ATSF trains with matching cars...even though some of the cars have the same name and/or road number.
