just for S&Gigs I pulled out my other UP die cast hopper, this one from K-line.
and lo and behold! When I pulled back the cardboard liner, there's a set of K-Line coupler shims! Hazzah!

Yes. Looks nice. Turns out that these models are almost identical to the Lionel 700-series hoppers, and the scale bolster will fit. Then you have all the missing underframe structure.
