The box for a K-Line GP38-2 diesel has a label that indicates "Full Digital Sound Upgrade Available." What was that -- and does a current supplier make something that will work?

Well you can upgrade the electronics to Electric RR Co and have tmcc/railsounds for your k-line GP38.
My Santa Fe Hudson was so marked, Lionel still had the sound and TMCC upgrade kits in stock! Since K-Line is no more and I guess this is not a K-Line by Lionel ( you did not specify ), the ERR kits are probably the way to go.
Lionel still has Railsounds 4 generic diesel boards. They used the term upgradable loosely though. I am not sure of what this engine actually needs to make it function under TMCC. Sometimes it takes a new radio board and Railsounds board. Hopefully your owners manual has the details.

Tons of RS4 boards available with a variety of sounds. Is this engine a TMCC engine or conventional? If conventional, sometimes K-Line's "command upgradeable" or "sound upgrade available" was tongue-in-cheek, and really just meant there was space to put the components in! Long ago I got a couple of K-Line "command upgradeable" engines, they were just conventional engines. OTOH, Lionel's "Command upgradeable" engines were typically a plug-n-play affair.
