i have a kline semiscale hudson and like it. I want to put in a fan smoke unit and a smaller electronic reverse board so i can throw an older railsounds system in the tender. Is there a lionel basic eunit board available that is not too costly? Recommendation for a fan smoke unit (mth?) that might fit?

I have put the MTH AA-0000070 smoke unit into the K-Line semi-scale Mikado, so I presume it'll fit in the Hudson. However, you do have to change the resistor and provide a DC supply for the smoke fan. If you want chuffing smoke, you have to provide some sort of control to manage that.
The Dallee #400 reverse board should do the trick for the reverse funciton.

Hi,
Nice suggestion! I also read the ERR 'Mini Commander' would be strong enough to drive the motor in this engine (with overload protection just in case) and it is only about $35 which would also give me TMCC vs the $50 for the Dalee board. I will read up more on both options.
Thanks!
Andrew
Although I haven't tried it, the MC2 may work in this application. Remember, you need an antenna for TMCC, and typically the handrails are used in TMCC steamers. However, being a conventional locomotive, I suspect they're not insulated. The handrail stanchions are likely not insulated, so you'd have to address that issue. Most of my TMCC upgrades of conventional stuff puts the TMCC board in the tender and I float the tender shell for an antenna.
