I also have two K-Line engines with TMCC that sometimes work and sometimes don't. Have you tried to run them conventionally? Do you have a simple transformer from a starter set? You can hook one up to your track then turn the power up. Your engines will respond to variable track power just like any conventional loco.
I have tried running them with a lionel transformer the EP-5 does nothing but light 1 headlight the SD70 does the start up and run sounds, also smokes, but does not move. If I put the battery in it idles and shuts down after removing power. I don't mind if I could run them without tmcc, I would just like to run them.
