I'm a newbee to 3RS but not to O Gauge. I have a fleet of stock, out of the box Golden Gate Depot heavyweights, and the couplers are something less than wonderful. I see GGD sells Kadee couplers for them. How difficult are they to install, and is there anything special I should know before I jump in? Thanks in advance for the advice.

The very first question that should be considered is: how big are your curves?
Normally, I'd make someone buy me a drink before I answered that question, but in the interest of true scale fidelity, I am working on that very issue now. I could go as small as 0-72 or as big as 128 but am leaning toward 096. I also have at least a 20 inch straight section between opposing curves to avoid any possible "S curve" action.
I just tapped the holes in the bottom of the car for 2-56 screws, and used micromark spacers to install kadee 805s. GGD can supply the little plastic spacer pads, but 3 of the micromark spacers is approximately the same thickness and I had those here already, so it works for me. The most annoying part is picking the spring attached to the lobster claw out of the hole. Leave the screw/peg the spring is attached to, its held on with a nut inside the car, so unless you disassemble the car, its fine to leave that screw. They work on O72 as long as there's no S-curves.
I tend to agree with Boilermaker1. Although, I used #2 self tapping stainless steel "sheet metal" screws from MicroFasteners for my Kadee #805 couplers, you might look into the newer Kadee "700 series" couplers, as they offer one with a long shank. I setup the Kadee couplers on my GGD cars so as to negotiate a MINIMUM 072 curve with Atlas #5 1/2 switches.
I have a few heavyweights and find the are pretty forgiving as far as curves. Mine are roughly 072. Gargraves flextrack. What I do have is easements entering and exiting my 180 turns. They work fine in this manner. I don't believe they would work that well going from a straight portion of track right into an 072. They really bound up entering my yard area.
As far as mounting the Kadee's. Using the provided holes. I purchased from Weaver a pair of their scale couplers and mounting brackets that allows them to be truck mounted. Trim off the truck mounting portion and toss it. What you are left with a nice thick shim that brings it pretty close to the required height. You can make your own shims but this method is way easier. Drill out the shim to allow a 2 56 screw to slip through. Tap or slowly thread the screws into the car and it's done. If your turns are an issue. Kadee makes a long shank coupler that should allow for more swing or keeping the cars further apart.
