Bought my TIU years ago second hand for $75.  Running software 4.2 or 4.3.  Non USB version.  Haven't played with it in years until wanting a train around the tree this year.  Wouldn't play nice via wireless.  After reading through Barry's DCS companion (sad to hear he as passed on), I figured I'd try tethering the remote.  Picked up the correct 4P4C "phone handset" cable today.  I was pleased to see the remote found the TIU, and I was able to add my B&P GP-20 without issue.   So, my system works with the remote tethered, but not via wireless.  I have re-seated the wifi chip in the TIU, no change.  I won't attempt disassembling the remote.  I have only one MTH locomotive, so I'm thinking I can get along fine with just the DCS Explorer.  I figure I can sell the TIU and remote with the disclaimer that it only works tethered.  And perhaps a knowledgeable person can get the wifi working also.  As I'm just a casual hobbyist, am I really going to lose functionality or features.  Just looking for opinions here.  Happy New Year all

The Explorer will have fewer features available to you but will still provide the basics and allow you to run up to three engines at once if you ever do decide to expand. I use one around my tree layout and it works perfect.

Your remote is most likely the cause of your connection issues, the wireless transceiver will most like need to be re-seated. Here is a YouTube video on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pv8X5D_j7Y

You could also consider a DSC Remote commander. It's an IR remote control that provide basic function control of a single engine: https://mthtrains.com/50-1033

I'd buy it if you're selling. I need one for my workbench.
