i just bought a marx wind up set but do not have the key for it. how hard are they to get??

If it's the square shank one - simple. Robert Grossman carries them. Some guys have also filed the end of a common nail square, and bent the nail to a 90 degree angle. If it's the kind that screws on, I don't know.
Grossman also sell repro screw-in Marx keys. This is the link to Grossman's online page. Another option for the square key is to get 1/8" keystock from a hardware store and bend it into shape.

it's likely you have the more common square key, but if it is a threaded key, both Marx screw key types had a 10-32 thread.
interesting thought about converting a nail to a square key. i'll have to pull out the hammer and anvil to see what size can be pounded into an 1/8" square profile.
