I absolutely love this model, and locomotive. One of my all time favorite Baldwins and brass models is this magnificent piece. It runs better than it looks, ball bearings everywhere; lights everywhere.. a feast to the eyes to see this in person. It was a true privilege to photo this piece in the studio today and its my pleasure to share it with you folks. Just simply amazing models.

Hi Guys,

It's simply amazing to me why the Rio Grande Challengers and their 2-8-8-2's have never been offered by any 3 rail manufacturer(the UP style Challenger in Rio Grande lettering is accurate; the Rio Grande had several of these), being that the Rio Grande is such a popular following.  I truly love the look of that large sandbox on the front deck and the smoke consumers on the sides of the firebox.  All that piping is amazing.  The UP Challenger 3985 just looks plain Jane to me; a large tube with little detail in comparison.

They are some of the meanest looking brutes around. Much, much more detail hanging out all over the engine and tender.

If someone would bring in these Rio Grande Challengers and then the Rio Grande  2-8-8-2's (class L-131 and L-132) they would sell out IMHO!

Steve

Pretty pictures that show off all of the highly detailed bits.

Would have liked to seen a picture of similar quality of the entire engine (and tender!) to see how those all impact overall together sort of like the 1st H-6 photo.  I feel like I missed out on how the sum of the parts might exceed the whole since this is another engine beyond the reach of the average mortal.

Erik.

Always a treat.  Keep 'em coming.  Agree with Martin. would be nice to see the overall effect.  Bet you have the camera equipment to pull it off.

But, thanks for the top quality professional pics that are there.

Curious.  Do you (or does anybody else) happen to know what minimum radius this engine needs?  I've seen similar quality engines, even a Finescale engine, running with no problems on Gary Schrader's layout both on YouTube and in person during O Scale West.  But, he's has very forgiving trackage geometry.

Absolute brute of a locomotive; possibly one of the 10 most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Tragically the chevrons on the front sandbox (which replaced a rising sun motif at the onset of WW II) were placed on the engine after one hit a school bus full of kids. Additionally, one blew up south of Denver in 1952, around Sedalia, CO, killing the 3 crew men and a railfan riding the cab. Cause: low water.

Have loved this locomotive ever since seeing a Richard Steinheimer picture of one backing smokily through the Provo, UT yard.
