Key Model Imports PA "Apen Leaf” California Zephyr

Produced 2010 by FM Train Model of Korea

In this first part of the photo review I took the extra time to place one of the Alco A units in the studio for some mug shots. These models really are the ultimate CZ power in my opinion. Without any doubt the PA elegance on the point of the Budd CZ cars had symmetry the short freight intended utilitarian F3’s could not match. Too me it was like pulling a Ferrari around the Le Mans with a Mack truck. Sure it worked; economic efficiency did not step in stride with style that much is certain. Not to forget the E7/8/9’s of the CB&Q yes they were also very elegant and yet somehow the Q managed to run 3 A units elephant style breaking up the lines in effect spoiling the effect the Budd sleek futuristic train had.

The Rio Grande really had the best outfit and the most scenic route along the CZ’s travels from Chicago to Oakland. The “Aspen Leaf” was a short lived scheme and sadly was replaced with my second favorite scheme the "4 stripe” that lasted until the late 50’s. Many theories exist why this scheme was eliminated some make a lot of sense such as keeping the honorary steamers clean.

These 2010 run Key Model Imports PA's are very special to me and I strongly feel they have been one of the most successful models KMI has imported even dating back to the Samhongsa era. Everything lined up with this project; the builder, the research, and everything else to produce a high water mark piece in the brass industry. The trucks are a mastery of design and fully function both as a scale model but just as the 1:1 prototype; a true masterpiece by one of the finest builders to have ever produced Mr. O at OCS. The full engine room detail in this model is not simply an etched brass plate; but a fully detailed scale model of the prime mover; a marvel only seen in a darkened room with all the myriad of incandescent light bulbs illuminating the engine room. Cleverly hidden the motor whirrs silently smoothly behind the turbo assemblies. A true treat to behold.

Key Model Imports tried very hard to pursue to the highest level of perfection possible in a production model with these fine miniatures. I feel very privileged to have these fine models in my collection; I only wish everyone could share in the amazing realism these models convey.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

These certainly are beautiful. Thanks for posting separately Erik. I had been unaware of the Key models until you posted them several months ago but had seen some N scale models a couple of years ago. I admired them and thought that perhaps I could make a set of these myself and did so with some Williams Warbonnetts back in 2010. Also used a powered MTH B unit with smoke and a friend created the decals for it. I'm no craftsman when it comes to repainting but I had fun and mine look pretty good from a distance (the 10' rule?). They actually made the cover of the OCt 2012 issue of 'the other' train mag....

Great photos and models Erik!  I didn't know about the prime mover detail inside this loco. Very few models have prime mover detail. In fact, the only other one that comes to mind is the OMI 1993 run of the 8500HP 3 Unit Turbine. It has a nicely detailed turbine engine inside the "B" unit, but with sliding side doors to expose it, it was a natural.

KEY has really been setting the bar on diesels for the past 10+ years.
