My other thread was buried rather rapidly.  I am not bashing Lionel or anyone else...but, I would appreciate your response to these questions...

Did anyone else purchase one of these cranes and find it defective?

If so, please email me off-line to describe your crane problems and what you may have done to resolve the issues.

Thanks for any kind responses to llineba@surewest.net

For those who may be interested...the email sent by forum member CarlJ...as referenced above...detailed a situation identical to mine.  Carl was able to "pop" the appropriate "gear axle" back into its "hole" in the underside of the crane and gain control of the rotation of the crane body and boom.

I was able to see the same situation under my crane and "skillfully" popped that gear axle back into the proper hole.  Now the crane rotates as advertised.

For the record, Charles Ro was ready to accept my return in exchange for another working crane...which they said they would test for me before sending it out.  Of course, I would have been "out" the shipping charges.

I still have issues with the crane moving back and forth on the special gantry track...using Ross...I get a lot of wheel spin...and very little movement.  Something is out of whack...hopefully, I can remedy this problem myself.

Thanks to all who posted and emailed!

I just purchased one of the new Erie gantry cranes. Initially I had a lot of slippage on the new cargraves track. I cleaned this track with the blue track cleaner and it solved the slippage issue. Sometimes new track has an oil residue.

So far I like the crane however I don't think the magnet is nearly as strong as the old versions. It is also difficult to tell when the magnet is on or off.  The old version had a light in the cab that came on when the magnet was engaged.

As above, the track could be oily? My gantry crane seemed like it wasn't running very well on the track at first. Turning the throttle knob on the Cab2 properly took some getting used to. I think in my case just getting used to turning it at the correct speed was the problem. Worked fine after I fiddled with it for a while and got used to it.

I had a Ross and a Gargraves gantry track, the Ross track was pretty wavy up and down, Gargraves was very straight. I also thought the Ross track might be a problem at first, but the crane now works fine on both tracks after my fiddling with it. So I am convinced it was just me getting used to it.

I also agree that a light would be nice when the magnet is on. May have to look into adding that later on.

I am running mine on the gargraves track. It works great, I was very happily surprised.  I have sent too many items  back to Lionel this year.  I have a engine waiting to go, because the front headlight does work.  I just sent an engine back to High Country Hobbies, (Lionel, shorted out the track as soon as it was put on) they were nice enough to send me another new one right away, without having to wait for them to get the defective one.  Now that's customer service.

Like RBOATERTOO, I was pleasantly surprised that a toy with a motor worked perfectly right out of the box.  My crane sits along a stretch of O27 straightaway along which I have cut a piece of Lionel 6-65024 extra long straight in half (lengthwise) to supply the power from the main line.  I have wanted a 282 for a long time and this crane is even better since I run it with a CAB-1L.  Thanks, Lionel™!

After some tweaking etc, I found the following:  The magnet is not as powerful as I expected.  This has been stated earlier.  Even though I run this on my O27 line, I have a separate hook up to the CAB -1L base.  The other hookup is for my O31 line where I have my Lionmaster Challenger.  Both separate lines of track run off the 2 main channels of a post war ZW.  I thought perhaps there might be issues having 2 distinct CAB-1L operations but Lionel said it should work fine and I am here to report that it does.
