I have some vacation days I need to burn before the end of October so I'm thinking of taking my first trip to York. I've wanted to go for years but its always been one thing or another got in the way. It would be all last minute obviously... 700 mile drive and would need to find a good hotel ... should I shoot for Thursday arrival?

Or maybe I should wait until I can plan my first trip a little better.....???

RD ... GLAD you're going to make that trip to York.

Our group has stayed in Harrisburg (30 mins) many times, Lancaster (25-45 mins), and south (20-25 mins).  Do some searches with the major chains  --  you'll find something.

Oh, be sure you're there for Thursday.  Attendance is lighter (Friday is the most busy) - and there's always a great feel to the Meet.

We'll see you there!

If you are coming from the East you may want to consider staying in Lancaster, PA.  Its about a 30 minute drive to York but the choices of hotels, restaurants and shopping is much larger. The area is also more scenic and there are more things to do there. When we were attending York, we always arrived on Wednesday and lodged in Lancaster. Many York attendees lodge in Lancaster.

Your profile says Illinois.  If you're coming from the west, I suggest the Super 8 Carlisle South - just checked and they have rooms.  Full freight is $65 + tax, but AAA, AARP, or Wyndham Rewards membership will probably get you in under $60 with tax.  South side of Carlisle is about a 40 minute scenic drive to the fairgrounds, and you avoid the dreaded US 30.  We're coming from the same direction, and will be driving to Carlisle on Wednesday and then moving on to York for the next couple of nights.  However, I've stayed in Carlisle for the whole meet, and it's been OK.

BTW, the Wyndham Gardens is booked.

No offense, but places like Super 8 or Motel 6 are totally off my radar, I've had too many sub-standard stays in those when I couldn't afford better lodging, I refuse to stoop that low any more.

Try the Wingate or Four Points by Sheraton York, both were clean and comfortable.

I do NOT recommend the Comfort Inn & Suites on 2250 N George St., they're right on I83 and I got a very noisy room with traffic sounds all night.  NEVER AGAIN!

As far as those chains are concerned in York, I'll definitely agree.  Would not stay at the Super 8 on 30 or the nearby Motel 6.  Super 8s can be hit-or-miss.  I stayed at the south one in Carlisle in April, and it was fine (other than crappy wifi).  I always check the recent reviews before booking.

Try the Holiday Inn Express and Suites - 140 Leader Heights Road in York. Very nice place sure to be packed with a lot of train guys going to the Show. Stayed there many times. Also, you can reach the Fairgrounds from there without going on Rts. 83 or 30. Rt. 30 can be very crowded in the mornings and evenings. I just checked for availability, and they still have rooms.

Thank you all for the good advice... if I can pull it off I'd travel Wednesday ...mapquest tells me it's a 10+ hour drive.. so I have to find a room for 4 nights.

I think my taste in accommodations runs more along Gun Runner Johns..I'd rather pay a bit more for a nice hotel... at this stage comfort and security are more important than price... I'll call around this week to see what I can find and go from there... the 10 hour drive is going to be a hurdle but I really do want to try and make it at least once and this is the first time the stars have aligned...who knows if and when it will happen again...
