My wife and I attended a lecture, last night, At the Niwot Historical Society in Niwot, Colorado. Richard Fogg, (Howard's son), and his wife Janet gave an extremely interesting talk about the writing of their book "Fogg in the Cockpit" which is about Howard's World War 2 service as a fighter pilot in England. I already had a signed copy but it was great to listen to and meet them. They had copies of the book and two small Fogg Colorado prints for sale. When I talked to Richard I mentioned that I had "The Great Race" print of the Boradway and 20th Century Limiteds as the raced out of Chicago. He told me that as his father researched the painting he didn't know how to deal with the ugly industrial buildings in that part of Chicago. His solution was to have the trains traveling through a blizzard which not only hid the buildings but added a lot of drama to the scene. It is still my favorite Fogg painting.

What's in that book, anyway? Did Fogg do paintings or drawings from his time in WW2? Does it mention where he did his flight training? I'm wondering as I grew up near an abandoned WW2 fighter training field in Florida...
I've been meaning to get a copy of that book as I'm almost as interested in WW2 airplanes as I am into trains. I even have stick time in a few WW2 planes. My avatar shot makes my interest level clear, as I'm sitting in a P-51D cockpit at the time wearing full original WW2 flight gear (and flew in that plane in formation with two WW2 bombers about an hour after the shot was made).
Lee, It's a very detailed book about his year in England and his training before. Richard and Janet built the book around his diary. You read his diary, day-by-day, and then they fill in all of the details. Howard's diary is very detailed and enjoyable to read. He did do several railroad paintings while in England and some are included. The main subject of the book is the war but they do provide a summary of his artistic career. I highly recommend it. It is as about as close to being there as there is.
What did he fly?
John, thanks for answering my questions. I was on the fence about getting a copy (as I have more WW2 books than most of you have Lionel made items), but now I'll be getting one for sure...

Ditto, John....So much so that it hangs large and proudly in our living room next to the grand piano...the ONLY train picture on the main floor!! Gorgeous. Dramatic.
This sort of real world excitement surely would have been the highlight of an eastbound Chicago departure 75 years or so ago!!...a far cry from navigating/tolerating an O'Hare Airport departure nowadays!! ...Which they lump under the category called "Progress".
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Tim, Howard flew the P-47 and P-51.
Well, I know what my next Thunderbolt model will be, any pictures of it in the book?
There are definitely pictures of the P-51, including the cover photo. There are P-47 pictures but I don't remember if they show his.
