AFAIK, you can only get the #993 charger with another CAB2, don't know if it's available as a separate purchase.
That's fine, one way or another. I really don't want to buy any more components since I like to keep things simple and pretty much have what I might need with the Z-4000, DCS, and Legacy.
Just for the heck of it, I think I'll give a set of alkaline batteries a try tonight, even just temporarily, to see what happens with that.
Just make sure to turn off the charging circuit, some even suggest taping over the contacts in the cradle. I preferred Lithiums over alkalines
With the Alkaline or Lithium batteries, you don't need to keep the CAB2 in the command base cradle, that keeps it cool.
I think rechargable batteries and chargers getting warm is fairly normal. Its the fear of damaging any sensitive electronics in the based that tends to "spook" oneself. I recharge my legacy batteries in another battery charger used for other double-a's. It gets warm as well, always has, theres even a warning that the charger and batteries may become hot. This way I can still use the batteries that come with the system, they seem to last longer than alkalines, but I don't subject the base to any heat.
The higher temperatures will shorten the life of the rechargeable batteries. Since my #993 keeps them cool and comfy, I just charge them in that.
I, temporarily at least, replaced the rechargeable batteries with a fresh set of alkalines.
The battery power seems to be fine, but I'm still having some strange things occur with the screen display. Sometimes I get a screen complete with display, and sometimes I just get a blank screen.
When I am able to see a full display screen, the engine I'm using operates as it should; with the blank screen, nothing works.
I'm not accustomed to that sort of thing, so just gave it up for the time being. I try not to let my hobby frustrate me, so I'll just come back to playing with Legacy at another time. Meanwhile, I'll just continue to operate with DCS, which has been reliable for me in the past and works even better now that I have installed the latest version.
The saga isn't over by any means because I already have several Legacy engines, with a couple more on order. I'm determined to get things to work, even if it involves a trip over to Big Mike's place.
Added note from the OGR office:
When I came into the office this morning, I decided to see how the Legacy Cab 2 here performs. A brief push of the CTC button and it comes on with display. Another brief push and it goes off. I tried this several times and it worked well every time. A very different response from the newer Cab 2 I have at home.
There are a number of people complaining about the power up/down of the new production run of CAB2 units, perhaps they're not all crazy.
After hearing about yours, I'm glad I have two of the older units!
You're the second person with a blank screen on a new Legacy remote in recent days here. Don't they know they're supposed to send the editor of a train magazine a working unit?
Allan you are so close to Lionel's service center I would not wait to get in there and talk with Mike Regan. everyone that is having this issue will benefit from you showing Mike the issue.
My Legacy controls worked flawlessly for 30 month and last April one day I turn my remote on like I always did and the LCD screen went black, so I replace the batteries and stay the same, got in touch with Lionel and provide me with RA, my remote and base/charger went to Ohio, when I got them back I notice my remote totally discharge the batteries in less that 24 Hrs., no matter what kind or brand of batteries I use,so, my controls went back to Ohio, got them back in the same condition, they replace the batteries but, they did not correct the discharge issue of the batteries, again my controls went back to Ohio for 3rd. time, finally on June 18 I received my controls and they replace the remote, of course I am running my trains since then, thanks Lionel, you did good this time
