I recently purchased a NORFOLK SOUTHERN HERITAGE LINE (6-28344) at the Lionel Christmas sale in Charlotte.  This engine was refurbished and sale was considered final.  Lionel ensured me that it had been serviced and was in perfect working condition.  I finally pulled it out of the box earlier this week and put it on the Christmas layout.  When I power up the track the cab light immediately turns on and the speaker crackles a little.  All other Legacy engines that I own do not respond until addressing them on the Legacy remote and powering on.  Is this behavior normal or is something awry with this engine?  I've gone through the factory reset procedures described in the manual and this still occurs.

Thank you in advance for your help.

This is normal for this engine from what I can see on the catalog description.  Later versions of Legacy Engine electronics keep the Cab dark until "startup" but earlier versions the Cab comes right on at power.  The small crackle in the speaker is most likely the audio electronics powering.

Unless the crackle is on going after power is applied, I think you're good to go.  Does it operate fine otherwise?

A good way to know for sure is, since the introduction of the "sequence control" the startup has turned on the Cab lights.  If this engine doesn't have sequence control, it has the older electronics, and the lights will come on with power.

I think you are probably good to go and your engine is performing as designed.  I have several that are pre-2011ish that act the same way.

After I made that statement I ran the GP9 and found that ONLY the number board lights come on when I turn on the juice, my 3rd Rail E7 does what I said in my previous post.  Neither gives me any "crackle", but again, I'm using them under DCS.

When I press Start Up the GP9 headlight and cab light come on, but the cab light goes out when the engine starts moving (really like the sounds Lionel gave this engine).

Maybe I'll pull out the CAB1-L and see what happens.
