On certain sections of my layout my Legacy engines will often lose all sound effects.  The engine continues to respond to the throttle, but to restore sound I have to shut down and restart engine to get  sound back.  What causes this and is there anyway to remedy it?  Thanks.

I just ran into this with a RS 5.5 board. Battery didn't help. The fix was to pull the chips and clean the contacts with contact cleaner. RS 5.5 is built like RS 4 and 5 with removable chips. Later Legacy with RS6 has a chip that is soldered to the board so ignore this suggestion if thats what you have.

you need a tool to do this. Don't use a screw driver.

There have been a few that just wanted a battery, and they didn't respond to the cleaning the contacts.  My go-to solution is to first clean the rollers, check the wiring, and then reseat the PLCC chips, that does fix a variety of ills, especially in older units.  Harry Henning and I have several Legacy locomotives that didn't respond to any fix but the battery, that solved the problem for those.
