I have a set of Burlington F-3 Legacy engines I bought last year at York that have started to give me problems. Before I send them back I want to see if I am missing something. I have the AA set, a dummy B and a Powered B. I am running them in regular TMCC mode, not legacy. They were working okay for about 6 months. I started to first have problems when they would respond to any address and begin to run along with my other trains. Then the AA units would start to blink their cab lights every time they would start up. Then the smoke units would not run on the powered B or the Dummy A. Now no smoke on the powered A. I can get the blinking lights to turn off by repeatedly pushing the 0 button, but despite numerous resets and reprograming I am unable to resolve the problem. Is it something I'm  missing or is it time to send them back to Lionel? I am programing them individually as the instructions say for TMCC and am using the same number. Do I need to treat them as a lash-up with separate numbers like normal TMCC engines?

Before you pack them up there are a few things you can do "in the field".

 

In terms of the engine responding to any TMCC ID#, Lionel mentioned that all legacy engines respond to ID #99. If your AA units were set to ID #99, they would be operating on the "universal ID" and as such be subject to commands sent to other units. If the locomotives were not set to #99, I would look inside the shell to see if any wiring was loose or pinched before suspecting the circuit boards.

 

I think the blinking lights/no smoke issues are connected as all new Lionel units are designed to blink when there is a fault detected in the motor drive and/or smoke system. Two blinks in sequence indicate a problem with the smoke element (resistor); three indicate a fan problem. Pressing 0 on the remote merely clears the fault, but it does not fix the problem. The good news here is the smoke unit and sub-components are available from Lionel's parts website, so if you are comfortable doing this repair then the unit does not need to go back.

 

In terms of your last question, each locomotive should have its own 2-digit ID#. Thus, the AA set would be treated as a lash-up, not as two engines with the same ID.

Ok, all VISION ENGINES are default at #99, Legacy engines only, are still engine 1,

to the best of my knowledge. I have many of them, not bragging, but, they are all engine 1 out of the box. So, I would re-program your engines, each unit with an individual ID#.

Actually, I would do just the AA part first. Give each unit a number, a different number than they have now. Then, I would give them a TR#. Do it exactly right, A Powered as the lead, A Dummy as the Backward...Then, if they work at this point

properly, I would add the B"s...

If this does not work, call the Lionel Customer Service number....

PS: My latest SD35 L&N, has the buttons backwards, and the ODYSSEY SWITCH

is the run program switch....I found this out by accident...I will call Lionel about

this as it needs to be corrected while under warranty..Its hard to work on these

engines with all the wires etc., so sending them in for repair is a lot cheaper than

getting all frustrated trying to fix it yourself....Good Luck..
