I know there have been posts regarding the earlier legacy engines (6-28567) where the smoke units will not shut off or will come on upon power up. I couldn't tell if there was a fix. My GP7 smoke unit keeps running after I shut the engine down. I hear the fan running and smoke continues to come out. Sometimes I can turn it off by pressing the smoke off button on the CAB or shutting down power to the track. Is there a fix for this or will just have to run this thing with no smoke.

No fix. Turn the unit off via the smoke control.
Did you try resetting to defaults?

Yes thank you. I did reset the engine and it did not fix the problem. The smoke unit always comes on when I power the engine up and I need to manually turn the smoke unit off either before or after I shut the engine down.
I'm guessing that would probably be either the wiring to the regulator or the smoke regulator. It receives the serial data and controls the smoke unit heater.
These are earlier units. I have the NYC which are some of the first Legacy units. They do not shut down with the shutdown key. This was an early complaint discussed at length on the forum that was remedied in later releases.
I thought he was saying that the smoke control didn't always turn it off either. I've had TMCC stuff that acted this way, it usually ends up being the smoke voltage regulator module.
I have a GP35 that the smoke continues to operate after shut down,,,I just use AUX 8 to turn it off...

Yep, I have a Lionel S-1 Duplex that the smoke unit will not turn off - via the remote or the switch... it was the voltage regulator module.
The Lionel service tech says it's the AC regulator. They want $100 + shipping to replace it.
Gosh, I do them cheaper than that!

Then there must be a lot of AC regulators bad on the first generation of Legacy GP7s. Good luck I hope it works.
Is that ac regulator part of the smoke unit?

Some are separate and some are integrated with the driver mother board...
The TMCC locomotive regulators are a small module, usually in heatshrink, that are typically loose in the engine. Some later models actually projected the triac out and bolted it to the chassis for better heatsinking.
The early Legacy ones are usually similar, and they're typically bolted to the chassis as I described. For this locomotive, here's what's on the product page. The projection you see on the left is the triac to be bolted down.

Thanks.

So do I but we do not have a warehouse to support. I guess the labor rate is $70 or it is targeted at 1.5 hrs. This is what is going to get at the margins in a few years with no more authorized techs for Lionel. Just the savings in shipping alone will make a difference. Once the price of maintaining a train goes up this much, the harder it will be for folks to afford the hobby. G
If it takes an hour and a half to swap out the regulator, they need to train more techs, or actually train them better.

Really. Maybe I can send it to you for repair. How much do you charge?
I have a NYC leagacy gp7 that keeps smoking after shut down, and you hear an electronic buzz sound. I think it may be norma for some of these as stated above.

Dean, the service manager at Lionel, NC guarantees in writing that the 691ACRG103 will fix this problem - that is if they do the work!

All the early Legacy smoke units did not shut down with the "shut down" button. It was a pretty major complaint early on. What they could have done is alter the code in the CAB2 to also issue a smoke unit shut down command. I can't remember if this was in the rev notes. Hope it all works out. I'll be watching for an update. Thanks for keeping us posted.
