Hello,

Any of my Lionel Legacy locomotives turn on when I power up the track. Smoke, lights, and sound come on, but I can't get them to move.  They won't turn off either unless I turn the power off.  This never used to be a problem. Does anyone have suggestions on what the problem might be, or how to fix it? I live in Kansas City, MO, but don't know of any local repair shops.

Thanks for your help,

Steve H.

Thanks for your help,

you are going to have to give us more info.

do you have the legacy system?

is your system plugged into a surge protector?

have you have any electrical storms lately?

do the lights flash on the legacy base?

Steve;

Another question... when you start up, are the tracks containing the engines fully powered to 18V??? I use a pair of old PW ZW’s to power my 4 tracks. I found that, if the track isn’t powered when I power up the layout, when I begin to power an individual track up, the engines exhibited the behavior you noted (and, occasionally, they took off at high speed). If I understand the Legacy engine instructions correctly, when you first power up the unit, it takes a short bit of time for the engine to determine if you are running conventional or Legacy - when I slowly applied power to the track, it thought I was going to run conventional.

Hope this makes sense!!!

Some have reported that the signal lug connection on the base has become loose inside.  If you are comfortable opening the base up that maybe a possibility.  Have you tried a basic loop of track to test.  Try to isolate it to the base vs a layout issue?  I suspect the layout is fine but it may be worth the few minutes.  Otherwise it maybe time to go to Lionel.  They repair the bases under warranty regardless of when it was purchased.

Are you using the TIU to power the track?

If yes, is the Legacy track wire connected to the TIU track out common?

Sounds like a loose wire or a tvs went out in the surge protector. Try the Legacy base power supply in another port on the surge protector or a new surge protector.

That's a good thought about the TIU but it did seem to work at some point unless something got changed.  Worth a look.

He already said he bypassed the surge protection with no good results.

Yep, missed the isolation test.

Steve,

As the men suggested plug directly into the wall outlet and see what happens.  Also if you are running directly to the track with no TIU, make darn sure your Legacy wire has not come loose from the track.

Does your Legacy Base light up, make sure the power wire to your legacy base from your Legacy plug, has not been damaged in some way.

You may have to send the Legacy unit into Lionel for repairs, if you have covered all these bases.
