Legacy remote charging problem

There have been numerous threads on this problem. You can call Lionel and arrange to ship it back for a free fix, although sometimes the replacement board doesn't seem to help. I got mine back only to see the same problem. If I recollect what I have read, some have sent their units back 3 times. Others just shut off the charger from the back of the base and use regular AA batteries.

I had to send my #990 and the #993 back (multiple times) to get the charging issue fixed.  I think I finally have both of them working now.

Send it back to Lionel if you want the charger to work, there is no other cure.

For some of us it is not free and they will not do anything about it. I would suggest buying an external charger and an extra set of rechargables like Duracell rechargables. Not too expensive and you have a back up set.

Mine never worked well either then just quit.

With all the reports on the forum concerning this issue, I opted to use good Alkalines.

No further issues.

In this day and age and a simple charger can't be made correctly.......

If you go this route, remember to flip over the Base and turn the charger off.

There is a little switch top corner on the bottom of the Base.

my understanding is Lionel is providing unlimited warranty on the Legacy units.

Well, until they stop providing it.

My legacy base from the original batch that came with the Big Boy was just shipped back from Lionel, still under warranty

I've shipped one several years old back as well, but at some point, I suspect the policy of a blanket warranty will cease.

I agree one day it might, but until then I encourage everyone to take advantage of it

Oh, I did!  I think they're all working now, so I don't have anything else to fix!

Had my new Legacy out of the box all of one day and the charger stopped working.  I followed some advice given on this forum.  I turned off the charger and baught some good energizer green rechargeable batteries that came with a simple recharger for $15.00 at Lowe's.  Easy fix and no hassel.  Some of you said to put electrical tape over the contacts.  If the charger is turned off, do you still need to do that? 

I also shut off my Legacy charger, and purchased the Energizer "Smart Charger", which displays a timer "countdown" during the charging cycle. NO problems since. 

Some have said that the CAB-2 will discharge via those contacts if not taped over. Don't know if its true or not

I used electrical tape on my Cab-2 contacts just to be safe. I also generally do not leave it in the charger cradle.

My charger worked, but I was concerned about the heat buildup.

My 990 and993 both charge ok, but I just charge with the 993, I think it charges cooler somewhat. And I limit the charging time to an hour with a timer if I walk away from it.

I also only charge with the #993, the CAB2 is cool and comfortable when I take it out.  The #990 heats it up more than I like.

FWIW: My new version 1.4 Legacy set seems to be charging fine, right out of the box. Perhaps Lionel has remedied the problem.

Well, their reported fix for both of my units, the #990 base and the #993 charger state "replaced charging board", so maybe they have an updated design.

I just sent in a request for an RMA for mine.  The captcha I hhad to type was "hah".  I'm thinking this is a bad sign...  

It's just a recognition of the issues they're having.
